95 model 150 burned the red wire coming out of the top of the motor just behind the flywheel. What caused it? Also, the black "tar" stuff in the flat piece where the wire comes out melted and started running out one corner.:(

Re: 150 Johnson burned wires

Does that red wire run to the positive battery cable on the starter solenoid? If so, it is the battery charging wire from the voltage regulator. You should remove the plastic cover over the voltage regulator (center of the head, 4 ss screws) and check the V-R for damage. Also, check the red wire to see if the insulation rubbed off. if you disconnect the plug with the yellow wires, and start the motor, you can check the stator for charging votage. It is AC voltage at this point.

One more thing, on the port side of the motor, the boat wiring harness connects to the motor harness(there are three plugs). see if there are any melted wires there, especially the ground (black), purple and grey wires.

O K, I checked the wires and no more are damaged. Just the red charging wire. What is the "V-R"? I am not sure about checking this stuff. What parts will I need to fix it and how much should they cost? Can I install them myself? Not very knowledgable about motors as you can tell.

V-R is Voltage Regulator. If you can find a place on the red wire where the insulation was rubbed off, there is a chamce the V-R is still good. If ot was truly an overheated wire, you will need to replace the V-R.

They are available many places on the web. Look around for the best deal. It should be about $100
