1986 150 hp Johnson stalls when trimmed up. Could this be caused by clogged carbs or maybe the fuel pump is getting weak. Engine runs fine when trimmed all way down and only sputters and stalls when trimmed up only a few degrees.

Re: 150 Johnson stalling

First, welcome to the forum. Second, my 1993 28hp engine behaves in a similiar manner, it doesn't die, but it sure acts up when kicked up. I can't really help other than to say you aren't alone. I don't know why nobody helped you yet. <br /><br />Hopefully someone with a real answer can help you soon.

Sounds like maybe some water in the bottom of the float bowls. When the engine is trimmed up it covers the carb jets. Is this possible? We need input from someone better than I am at outboard problems.

That certainly could be the problem. Could be other things too. We need a more detailed description of "Stalling"<br />Does it die suddenly or does is sputter to its death?\<br />Does it die when trimming at all speeds or just at high speed or just at idle.<br />Does it do it every time>

Sputters then dies at idle and very low rpms only. Normally a problem when trying to drive boat up on trailer or navigate in shallow water at low rpms. Runs fine when trimmed up in middle to upper rpm range.

Almost certainly carb related. I'd tear down the carbs, give them a good soaking in a suitable carb cleaner, at least an hour per carb, longer if possible. Spray the carbs off with aerosol carb cleaner and then blow them out with compressed air., every orifice and passage way and don't forget the high speed jets in the bottom of the bowls. Do a good visual inspection of the carbs paying particular attention to the pickup tubes, looking for loose of cracked tubes. Now reassemble them with new carb kits and make sure you get the floats set correct.
