Hi all,
I took a new to me '97 boat out yesterday. Having just paid $1000 to a shop to go through the engine and make sure everything was perfect, I was disapointed to put it in the water and immediatly at the dock have the check engine light come on and stay on. This is a '97 150 ocean pro. We tried allot of stuff thinking clogged vent, bad gas, etc. Engine was running really nice too. Eventually we figured out that if we gave the primer bulb a couple squeezes, the light went out, and we were able to run around allot with the light out from 5kts up to 20kts, didn't seem to affect the way the light operated. Usually on restarting the motor after sitting awhile, the light would come on, squeeze the bulb the light went off within @ 20 seconds. We ran in for 1/2 hour with the light causing trouble on and off, got to the marina and light was off, 20min run to the dock, no light. Put it on the hose fitting to flush and the light was on and stayed on. I'm open to suggestions as the shop I used doesn't appear ready to stand behind their work, I am of course free to take it back to them so they can find the problem and correct it, but on my dime  . VRO? fuel pump? I didn't see any leaking anywhere. ANy suggestions on how to track it down??? Greatly appreciated :p .
Don T

dfisher....I think I would be toting the engine back to the wrench. Don't know what he did for a grand but I don't think a funky engine lite should be part of the deal if he did check it out as good as the money says he did.

Keep us posted and welcome to iboats.

Re: 150 Ocean Pro engine light

Thanks
That was my first thought, but after talking to the head of service dept there, I left with the impression that they found me a complete idiot, or care not at all about repeat buisness. Either way, I think cut my losses and find a good mechanic, or fix myself. On another board someone else had a similar experience with the same shop. Just hoping someone else has had similar experience and has tips about troubleshooting. Seems a fuel pump that works off engine vacuum pulses must be inherently weak anyway.

I think I would take it back anyway and make them fix it. You just dropped a large piece of change there. Least the can do is take a look. After this, no one says you have to go back.

If it is a carb engine, the check engine light is set by the fuel restriction sensor. Check fuel filter, anti-siphon valve, kinked hoses, fittings and hoses for proper size.

Re: 150 Ocean Pro engine light

It is carb engine, I pulled the plastic fuel screen on the engine, it looked brand new, fitting and hoses are not new, doubt they were the issue, no kinks, how do I check anti-siphon valve, and I assume it is in the primer bulb? There is a fuel/water seperator with a spin on cannister, could that be causing a restriction???
Thanks again,
Don T
ps wrote an email to the owner of Castaic Marine, waiting to hear his reply regarding my experience with his establishment

Re: 150 Ocean Pro engine light

Change the fuel filter first as that is the most common fuel restriction problem, as long as there are no kinks or other obvious restrictions anywhere. A faulty valve in the primer ball is another source of problems. Buy a genuine Bombardier (OMC) primer ball, if needed.

Re: 150 Ocean Pro engine light

Thanks Sea Horse, is the plastic strainer screen the fuel filter, or is there another paper type filter like a car has. An OMC primer bulb isn't to big an investment. Do the fuel pumps get weak, or just die outright??
Thanks again for the great help,

Don T

Replace the spin on cannister and inspect the plastic screen on the front of the motor.
