My 1995 150 hp ocean runner bounces on the transom while in reverse. It works, just sounds and looks bad. This started the second time out after getting a tune-up at the local shop to include new water pump, lower unit service, and "sync and link".
The mechanic says he can barely duplicate it, it's not that bad, but it happens every time I've taken it out since.
Am I ruining my reverse gears by using it this way?
Is he an idiot or am I, for not paying someone else to check his work?
Other than reverse the engine runs perfect on a 1996 21'Aquasport. Thanks for any suggestions

Am I ruining my reverse gears by using it this way?
Probably.
If it worked prior to the waterpump change, your mechanic probably turned the shift rod a time or 2 putting it out of adjustment. You might be able to correct it with a cable adjustment. The right thing to do would be drop the lower unit and set the shift rod at the factory recommended heighth.

Great. I didn't think those gears would like that.

Is it bouncing because it's not fully meshed in reverse gear, and the cable adjustment would put "in gear" completely?
I'd like to do the quick fix until my regular service in July... at a different shop.

dont quick fix it
if you mis adjust the cable to get full reverse engaugement you lost full fwd engagement and yes it only takes a few hops out of gear to ruin the gear and clutch. if it worked before and not now odds are the shift rod height is off.

Thanks. I may try it myself with my SELOC manual. First time for everything!
If I don't replace anything, just adjust the shift rod height I shouldn'r get in too much trouble... Should I??

hehe you know it may be that your trim/tilt is low on oil/has air in it and is trying to lift its self out of the water I have a leak in mine and it does that when its low.
