I'm new to high performance bass boats. I have a new to me 1994 basscat with a Evinrude 150 intruder on a 5 inch manual jackplate turning a 13-3/4x25 Renegade prop at 5100 rpm giving me 51 mph GPS. The prop shaft is set at 4-1/4 inches below the bottom of the boat (used a laser level, works great). Gets on plane pretty good. Just before I get clear up on pad at about 45 mph the boat feels "slippery", maybe its just reduced feedback. Then as it gets on pad I get strong torque.

This boat should run about low to mid-60s with this motor if set up right. My use now is light, 2 people, empty livewells and only 1 tank of gas - 20 gal. But once a year I go to a boat in camp in canada so then I have heavy use, 2 people, lots of supplies, 52 gallon gas. Hope to get set so I can still get on plane. lol. It probably has about 650 lbs people and gear which drops to 450 after reaching camp

I'm not confident enough yet for chine walking and I'll have to lift more weights to handle more torque.

I want something that is an all aroudn set up. Now if I raise the motor will the torque reduce or get stronger? Should I raise this motor with this prop or switch to a raker prop?

Thanks!

The Renagade Bass edition is basically a 4 blade Raker-same blade design and simular rake, but the 4 bld should put you on plane slightly quicker.
Torque-steer should be less with the 4 as well.
If you have low-water pick-up, I would raise the engine a little and test.
5100 is a bit low on top-end too.

EDIT: I punched in your numbers and it shows 21 percent slip... this is very bad. you should be in the 5-8 pecent slip if operating efficiently..
If the GPS speed is correct, and 25" is fact on pitch, if we figure a raesonable slip figure of 8 percent, that would indicate a tach problem because that computes to about 4500RPM..

Basscat has a forum on their website with all
manner of setup questions , might give it a try.

The best man to discuss set-up is right here at Iboats-Dhadley...
Plus, many others that have a very good rep in the industry, also, right here.

The first day I get to take it out and tinker with it and there are thunderstorms. lol.
The slip is terrible on paper but its not cavitating.

I am going to raise the engine but will that increase torque?

Not just on paper....your numbers don't add up.
We can assume the GPS is correct for the most part. Cavitation is a loosely used term...you also have drag....Huummmmm...
Is the hull clean and undamaged???
I may be wrong, but I "think" there could be an issue with the tach, and I'm thinking you should be a little higher with the engine.
Is the prop in near perfect condition??

Prop looks good, got some burs but nothing that wouldn't come off with about 30 seconds of file work. Hull looks beautiful, only one scratch. GPS matches my truck speedo pretty close so that should be right. Only thing I have is a stainless skeg guard but its the one that slides over and matches the existing skeg so all it adds is a little thickness. I wouldn't think it would add much drag. I wont get to do anything until the weekend. Water big enough to open her up is an hour away.
I appreciate the help.
