I tried a search on this subject, but didn't find what I'm loking for. I need to replace a heavily rusted reservoir on the trim/tilt unit.

Can I remove this unit w/o removing the outboard from transom?

You didn't give year or model but there are probably 3 bolts that hold the resevoir onto the hydraulic unit, and one of them is, no doubt, between the resevoir and the transom making it a bit inaccessible. So if you can't get at this bolt as it is, the next step would be to remove the entire trim tilt unit rather than removing the entire outboard. To remove the tilt unit you may have to remove some of the bolts that mount the outboard to transom and then spread one of the stern brackets apart a bit, but you don't need to lift or remove the motor.

You definetaly have to split the transom bracket to access the unit to remove. It can be done without rmoving engine from boat. Good Luck!

Depending on the year, you may or may not need to remove/slide the port transom bracket slightly to the side to remove the PTT assembly.

If the transom brackets have a cut away portion which allows the PTT assembly to tilt back and away from the brackets, then obviously that saves you some work.

In either case, there's no need to remove the engine from the boat.

It's unlikely that the reservoir is rusted as that item is a aluminum casting item. I would suspect that you're speaking of the electric motor?

Re: 150 Trim/Tilt Motor & Reservoir removal

It's a 1994, model J150NXERA. And yes it is actually the motor housing that's corroded severely, I checked this weekend. The reservoir appears to be aluminum, I can't see all of it.

I suppose I'll have to replace the entire unit. Thanks to all who have replied, any ideas on how to keep the replacement costs down? Can I purchase just the motor or motor housing?

You can replace the motor only. Got a shop manual?

Try not to break the heads off the 3 bolts that hold the motor on. They often break when stuck. Heat helps a lot. Make sure you replace the oring under the motor. Be careful with the little coupler that goes between the motor shaft and the pump. Put the whole trim tilt unit in a big vise when doing all this.

Good. I think your trim unit is like my '95. The most difficult part of the job will likely be removing the pivot pins that go through the transom mounting bracket and the top and bottom of the t & t unit. There is a bolt on the trim motor on the port side that can't be accessed without removing at least the top pin. More than likely you will need heat to remove this pin.

If the unit still works, run it up to it's highest position. support the engine and take the weight off the trim unit by running it down a little. Remove the cir- clips from the top pin and drive it out of the transom mounting bracket. This is where you may need heat.

With the top pin out you should be able to tilt the trim unit out at the top far enough to get that last bolt out of the trim motor.

The removal and replacement is pretty straight forward. As Lorin pointed out make sure you align the coupler and be careful about the routing of the wires as there is a potential for pinch points.

Arco and Sierra make replacement motors as well as BRP. Arco and Sierra are a little easier on the wallet.

Thank you all for the good advice on the tricky points. I'll give this a try once I get my oxy-cetylene torch in business. I believe in getting all my ducks in a row before I tackle projects such as this.
