150 V6 Tilt-Trim Leak Down ??

I have a 1987 150 Merc 150 V6. When I tilt the motor up, it will gradually leak down, even compressing the trim cylinders. Under power, I have to continuously bump the trim up to maintain motor position. There are no hydraulic leaks that I can see. Is there some type of check valve system and if so, can it be serviced, and where would it be located?

Thanks for any help..
Southern Catfisher

In the mid 90's we had issues with the port trim ram check valve failing.. causing the motor to drop.. BUT.. it only fell to the outer rams with my experiance......

Hi S.C.,

Just fixed exactly this problem on a friends 135 about a month ago. It was the check valve in the port ram, but it was leaking through both parts of the valve. Are you familiar with the valving in the ram? It's so you don't get a pressure spike when the motor is tilted full up. When the port trim ram tops out it opens a valve to a pressure relief. We had a leaking pressure relief AND leaking check valve. They are both in the port trim piston and it looks like one valve, but it is 2 parts.

Hope this helps.

Chris............

P.S. You like the avatar?

Re: 150 V6 Tilt-Trim Leak Down ??

I have the same problem with mine. I did some research on it and found it is a problem with the seals. IF you look at a schematic the system has many many seals. There is a plastic screw plug on the side of the trim cylinder(right side when looking at the back of the motor). If you unscrew this plug(make sure motor is in full up position with LOCK LEVER ingaged)it will have three o ring seals on it. I changed mine and it almost cured the problem. It still slips, but very very slowly. As far as the other seals inside the trim I've never got to them. You need special tools to get at them. If you pull this plug you will loose some fluid so you will need to refill and bleed the system. The manual goes step by step on this procedure. Very easy. KCLOST call me if you need to.
Southern Catfisher, I wish you lived closer I'm sure I could help you with that motor. I've been all the way through mine and have a spare motor for parts. Good luck and let us know.
CU

--------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Thanks guys for the information. This gives me a good starting place. I also received my Seloc manual yesterday. Just thumbed through and found the tilt/trim section. Will read it in detail later and try a fix. Will let you know the results.

Thanks
Southern Catfisher

P.S. achris60 - Like your Avatar (glad I could help). I completely rebuilt mine from the top down and it still did it. I finally solved the problem by changing out the motor/pump
