150hp outboard johnson problem?

I think it's around a 1987-1990 Johnson 150 V6 outboard motor. Last time I took it out, the boat engine control was in neutral and the motor is revving really high. Then I would go to put it in gear and it would shoot off quickly. Do you guys think it's in the motor or the control that needs to be fixed? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Paul

disconnect the cables at the motor and start engine(with water supplied of course) see what happens could just be cables if not check link and sync on the motor could also be air leak in fuel system dont let idle too long on hose though if high idle it could go boom good luck

Make sure the link arm between the spark advance lever to the timer base is not hanging up. Sometimes the original factory grease can dry out under the timer base. That can cause the timer base to stick/move slowly-causing an advanced spark condition. (which will bring the rpm's up.)
