Read up on what to look for in regards to inspecting the waterpump(wear on base plate, etc),It will probably be a simple impeller change and new gasket. No shimming involved.Oh,btw, its perfectly normal to take some time for water to start flowing out.The t-/stats have to open to allow flow.

Re: 150hp waterpump?

thanks for the info... ive not owned a boat in about 10 years... and the last was a 200hp merc.... and it had a solid stream... and also picked up alot faster than this 150... so i would say it needs a tstat or pump and i know theyve not been changed in atleast 2 years.. so i want to change them to be safe.....

Info is greatly appreciated ..:D

If, when the tell tale is "spitting", it is cool or cold, it is perfectly normal. All the water from the tell tale has to go through the t-stats. If the engine is cold, that would be the little bit that gets through the air bleed pinholes in the t-stats.

In cold water, it's pretty normal for a sporadic tell-tale at idle, even with a warmed up engine.

Water pump is straight forward, but there's a few simple details that are very important. If I were you, I'd get the right manual for it. (mercury factory maintenance manual.)

hope it helps

A good way to get a handle on how well the cooling system is working is to install a water pressure gauge on the motor. This way you know if it is working well or not. Following is is some information on that.
