15HP EVENRUDE

Hello all,<br />just got a used 15 hp evenrude motor and it starts great but it heats up lower case surges then backfires and quits. It will not idle at all. Almost feels like engine is under load of some kind. Please help. Have I bought a lemon or should I just count my losses and find another motor.<br /><br />bill<br />

Hello wadeiss<br /> It sounds to me like its over heating. Probably time to service water pump. There are several other things you need to do also. Can you give us the model# and ser.#?<br />Remember, when life hands you lemons, you just make lemon ade.

Wadeiss, let's have some other basic info. Compression? Does the tell-tale flow at all? What do you mean by 'lower case surges'? With more input, the solution is easier to find.

The engine will load and will not idle and then all of the sudden it will be at normal rpm for the throttle position and then it will backfire and die. In nuetral the water in the tank churns but Im not sure of the water outlet. Im not much on boat motors when it comes to mechanics however I am when it comes to cars and lawn equipment. Just got the motor 2nd hand with a small jon and was hopin to do some back water stump jumpin this springtime.....or maybe not.

Also Im not entirely sure that it is an evinrude..thats what the guy who sold me the boat/motor told me. Its painted duck boat green and covers all the labels. Ive managed to uncover one label that gives the serial number. THe engine looks almost brand new under the hood and all the hoses and wires look like they may be a year or two old. The motor cant be more than 5 years old judging by the overall condition. Ill let you know of the numbers soon.
