15hp Johnson Outboard:Reverse does not engage

I try to put in reverse and at times, the gear lever will go into the reverse position but it wont engage the gear. Any ideas?

has the lower unit been off, sounds, like the shift linkage is adjusted wrong. what year, model #.

Most likely thing is that the shift rod needs adjusting or tightening at the engine end. The shift rod is pushed downward to engage forward gear and pulled upward for reverse. If it is not tight and properly adjusted, it will not pull far enough.

How fast is your idle set. If engine isn't running slow enough it is extremely difficult to engage the R cogs........at least Merc is.

Its a 1982 Johnson Seahorse. Model # J15RCNC......the lower end as not been off.......I'll check that linkage and that shift rod too.
