just rebuilt the carb on my 1976 Johnson. It runs much better now, still have a slight idle problem but I think I can beat that problem. My main concern is there is water coming out of the lower thrust mount forward of the prop. Only thing I touched near that was I regreased, with marine grease, the pivot point zerk. You can just see it in this video. I will try to post pictures showing the water leak next post.

Well sure water is coming out those holes, they are drain holes. It is water that is escaping from the water pump housing, around the drive shaft opening. If it is a lot of leakage, you might want to replace the seal in the pump housing.

so this is normal? Check out the pictures showing the rubber clogging the holes and let me know what you think. Sorry for the ignorance, just learning on this old iron.

Here is a shot of the lower thrust mount. Should there be a seal here or is this normal?

Re: 15hp Johnson problems

Just found this that explains the cooling through the motor.

Water Passage Route in the Motor : As shown in this 1978 repair manual page, the water is sucked into the lower unit thru the screened holes in both sides of the gear case unit. It goes up & into the water pump. From there it is pumped up the supply tube to a block that is bolted to the underside of the power head. From here it is directed into the bottom of the water jacket on the right hand side of the power head. Some of the water can go out the overboard water indicator tube, but the majority goes up in this water jacket & then back down & into the block. Here it circulates around the sides of the cylinders, up & into the top of the head & thru both sides of the head & into the thermostat. Then out the thermostat, (which should open at about 160 degrees F.) up thru the water cover plate on the rear of the head & back out thru a passage in the head & out into the exhaust housing to be either sucked out thru the prop hub or thru the holes in the sides of the lower unit if the boat is not moving.

Still curious as to what the rubber debris is thats partially clogging these holes?? And what/where exactly is the \"pee hole\"? Saw this mentioned in the same article?

Not all year/models have a pee hole. Yours probably doesn't.

So, are you telling me that water is coming out that big hole in the steering pivot tube that the shift rod is exiting? There is no seal for that big hole, nor can I think of any reason water should be getting in there.

I don't know where the rubber chunks are coming from. Have you had an impeller disintegrate in the past, or have you looked at it now?

yes water is coming out that hole. Not massive amounts but its a steady stream. I found another guy who had a similar problem but he had water coming out this hole only when using flushing muffs.

How long would it take to do an inspection on the impeller? I really need to buy a manual......

Remove the 6 bolts holding the lower unit on, shift into reverse, the lower unit will drop an inch. Completely remove the top bolt holding the shift lever in, it will be between the exhaust housing and the lower unit. Tilt the motor into towing tilt and remove the lower unit. The water pump is held in by 4 bolts if memory serves correct, remove the bolts and remove the o-ring at the top of the drive shaft, the pump should now slide off and don't lose the key for the pump.

Installation is reverse
