15hp Mariner stalling out

I had my recently purchased 15hp 1986 Mariner out for the first time three days ago. It ran alternately rough and smooth for about 15 min. then quit. Later I discovered I had left the tank air valve closed. When I got home and removed the plugs they were wet. Would the closed tank valve caused the stall or wet plugs, or could there be an other problem

yes, it is because of you leaving the valve closed ....
