15hp Seaking/Chrysler fuel issue

Hi All!

I recently purchased an aluminum boat and 1980 Seaking 15HP by Chrysler. Boat and motor look like they had hardly been used but had been sitting a couple years after prior owner couldn't get it to start. Came with a bad tank of gas but motor had good compression & spark and would fire on carb cleaner. (I know... don't ever use carb cleaner. It's what was available at the time).

I brought it home, rebuilt the fuel pump, cleaned carb, replaced fuel lines and impeller, cleaned plugs. Cleaned tank and added new 50:1 mix.

After tearing the carb down twice more I still can't get it to start (unless I spray fuel in carb). Fuel pressure from pump is great. (shot fuel all over my wifes laundry.. yep I'm in the dog house...) Float, needle and seat all seem good. Gas fills the carb bowl but doesn't get to motor. No fuel puking out float vent which was problem prior owner had. After pulling the starter rope 30+ times the plugs are dry and show no sign of any fuel/oil mixture.

This is my first time working on an outboard but I'm generally good at fixing (or jurry rigging) things.

I didn't remove the press fit carb plug to clean the 4 small holes in top of carb body. Could this be the issue? I really want to test this thing tomorrow and can't buy a carb kit locally.

Please help. Fish are hungry and it's time to wet a hook.

Any Suggestions ???

You've read the sticky about cold starting an engine, right? Is the choke working?

Hi Erikpn,

Yep. I read about cold starting.

My choke doesn't function properly. I have to manually insert my finger into the carb to close choke butterfly. Once I do this I think it's doing its job.
In case it wasn't I even tried putting duct tape over 3/4 of carb opening before I realized the plugs were always dry.

Was out looking at it a moment ago. I'm thinking the problem must be in the area of carb I couldn't clean without removing the plug on top of carb. This area appears to be where the fuel goes after passing the through the idle screw seat. Not 100% sure so I'd love to hear any other ideas you may have for me to try.

Thanks for the reply.

Whoo Hoooo! Motor fired on third pull this morning!

Last night I removed the idle mixture screw and sprayed half a can of carb cleaner through the idle seat and down into the portion of carb I couldn't get to very well. It appears that finally cleaned out the 4 tiny holes or something.

Motor is running GREAT now. Will head to the lake this evening to see how it runs while pushing the boat.

Now I just need to find parts to fix the choke :)...

OK. Took the boat to the lake today for a test run. Motor fired on first pull. Ran great at dock so I idled past the no wake buoys. Started bringing throttle up and all was well. Hit WOT and boat started to plane then all of a sudden started bogging down and lost plane. After playing with it a bit I found running with the choke partially closed got boat to plane. Seems to run great when I do this but is too rich at idle.

I have rebuilt fuel pump, changed fuel lines, carb cleaned 4 times, cleaned tank, addend new 50:1 fuel, new primer bulb, correct float level (I think), new plugs.

Any suggestions?

Check for loose connections in the fuel tank line, it might be sucking air. Also make sure your fuel tank vent screw is open slightly so tank won't build up vacuum.
Does sound like a fuel starvation problem to me. You can verify by pulling cowling and spraying small amount of starter fluid in carb when it starts to bog. If it picks up and runs, there's your answer.
