Hey guys i was just wondering if anyone has a 1442 jon boat with a 15hp 2stroke outboard on it?I just bought a brand new 1442 [ncs]no center seat]alumacraft and have a new 15hp 2stroke merc.Will that be enough to push 2 people and some gear?I keep hearing that the late 90's to early 2000's 15hp merc were real powerhouses and were more like close to 18 maybe 20hp is this true?

I guess if that is the case i should have no probem getting going.I know it's not going to be a rocket ship but what type of top end does someone think i could get with that little 15.It is a 2001 that was never pulled out of the box for 10 yrs and has been fired up only 4times.It hasn't even been broke in yet.

Another question,i know the mercs run at 50:1 but what is the difference between the merc 15 and yamaha 15 of the early 2000's as the yamaha runs on 100:1 and the merc 50:1.Could you run the merc on 100:1 without hurting it i'm just curious?I thought they were made with basically the same types of components.What makes them so different that you have to run such a big difference in oil ratio?I know the cc's is different as the yamaha is 246 and the merc is 264 and man a beautiful 72lbs so light compared to a 15hp 4stroke merc i had at 114lbs.The boat is rated for a 25 but i keep hearing from marina's that the 15hp 2stroke merc will do more then enough,but i can't take their word on that as i want people who have actually had this motor on the jon boat i have or somewhat close to it.

I also hear from them that the 25 will be way to much.Is it a case that maybe i am just under estimating the little 15 because of it's size.The people at the marina think that i should get close to 25 to 28mph with what i told them and that is just hard to belive thats why i wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with this rig.I mean 25mph would be awesome if this were true,but i wanted some overall facts from some people out here first to see what they get.Well i hope someone has a close rig so they can tell me their experience,thanks for any help.

I'd think that 15HP Merc would do just fine on a 1442. I have a 7.5HP Force on a 1436 and it hauls butt, pops up on plane and scoots. Even with a full load of 600#+ it planes, just limited on top end.

I have no idea what the actual speed is since I've never run it against GPS, but the (inaccurate) speed wheel on the fish finder says 27MPH,,, so that could be anywhere from 22-32MPH

my setup consists of a 1444 g3 jon with a 9.8 4 stroke tohatsu. 9.8 mph with 2 guys and gear. 18-19 mph with 1 guy. measured with a gps. i hope this helps.

I've had several 14' jons with 9.9s and 15s on the back. I've run them up river with three grown men and their gear and never had any problems getting from point A to point B and onward, and when I didn't have as much company I could scoot along pretty quick. I don't know what speed you'll attain, and the guys at the marina really don't either; too many variables, but a 15 will be plenty for that boat, even with your intended loads. If you were in that much of a hurry you wouldn't have gone with a 14' john boat in the first place, right? Regarding the fuel oil mix; I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell you why similar motors require different ratios, but you'll find some in the Merc forum who are. All I can say is stick with spec. It's there for a reason. Now go get those fins and feathers!

I have no choice but to go with a jon boat incoop as i am on a tight buget.Also i have had all the nice 16ft cc boats and to me the type of fishing i do is a waste to me.The water i fish in is like 1 to 5ft of water.Also yes i need to scoot very fast sometimes.The weather here in fl in the summer turns faster then you can imagine and i may need that extra speed to beat a thunderstorm in.The boat is rated for a 25 and i think a 25 on that boat would be like a jetski,faster then i need to go.I will try out the 15 and if it works then i will stick with that,if not i will sell the 15 and buy a brand new 25hp 2stroke merc sea pro here in fl.I know that will scoot it.Thanks for the responses everyone.

I think It should do fine I do think with the load you described 28 would be a reach.
But it should have plenty of speed.parhaps as much as 25.Motor hiight is critical.
Try to get it as high as possible to a point just before venting becomes a problem.
If you want to really fine tune the setup/prop selection a tach and gps would be a big help.The Tinytach is reasonable and easy to install.

I just got a new prop for it as it comes with a standard 9pitch,i put a new 10.5 pitch prop on it so it will have better top end by a few mph.What is the biggest anyone would go on a 15hp 2stroke motor.I know most of the 25's come with a 13pitch which i think would be way to big but what about an 11 or 12pitch for a 15hp?To big maybe.

we run a 15 in a 14' wide body Lowe jon and it does great. We had a 25 and it was too fast esp. for the young boys.

The 10 1/2" is only a half size smaller than the highest pitch.The higher the pitch the less power to move a load and the more likely you will lug the motor.It might run a tick faster with no load but will be below its ideal rpm and will fade faster as you add weight.The motor needs to run close to 6,000 rpm to have the best overall performance.
Run the 9 first then give the 10 1/2 a try.I think overall performance with the 10 1/2 will be disappointing.good luck.

I have a buddy with the same motor and with the standard 9pitch he was over reving at 6200 rpm so i think a 10.5 is just right.Remember it is a 2stroke not 4stroke.It will have way more torque and weighs around 43lbs less then a 15hp 4stroke merc.I also got a buddy who has a brand new 15hp suzuki 4stroke that comes with a 9pitch and he was over reving at 6500rpm so he had to go with a 11pitch.I think the 10.5 will be just right.We will see.My buddy also gets 28.7mph gps with 2 adults and 2 kids in an inflatable which requires more power to get out of the hole.Thats the suzuki 15 4stroke were talking.I think the new prop will be good.
