I recently pickup a 16' fiberglass boat that looks to be converted to a straight outboard.

from what i see it looks like a good transom and is around 2" thick.

i'm fairly new to outboards with no real experience in any of the mounting stuff.

does everything look like its here as far as mounting an outboard?

and what size motor would i be safe installing on the setup?

Re: 16' fiberglass boat motor options

BIA certifies rated hp based upon several factors including length x width. Like I have a 17' tin boat with an 83" beam and it is BIA rated for 130....my 90 pushes it fast enough at around 50. I'd get on the www google BIA and look up the criteria.

Having what appears to have been an I/O and I don't know of any of those 2 cycle OMC 90 hp conversions of yesteryear, then one could assume you had at least a 120 hp on it.

2" transom is correct for most transoms I know of.

You might investigate a jack plate and it may save you a lot of cutting and all that you may not need to do....you may not have to cut the transom at all if you add a jack plate. You might consider removing the "modified bracket and installing the jack plate directly to the transom.

Other thing a jack plate will do for you is that you don't have to guess at getting the transom the right height to make your engine depth in the water the most desirable as you can adjust the height of the plate/engine for the best performance.

It appears that the boat was a high performance boat so one would expect significant hp would be the case for getting the most out of the boat....it may handle a 150 with a fancy SS high performance prop.

Hows that for starters.
