I am beginning a new project and thought i would share it with all of you. I picked this up at the right price and plan on using it as my personal fresh water fishing boat in NW Florida. I just picked it up last week. I have already started to strip it to the bare hull as it had some rotted wood, slow rivet leaks, faded paint job, etc. and needs some lower unit work.

I plan on spending as little money as possible and about 60 to 90 days to complete this job.

Re: 16' Grumman Restoration

The first things I did was remove the rotten wooden deck and front seat pedestal, the steering and throttle cables, and remove the lower unit.

I found the foward gear and pinion gear missing a few teeth. Someone must have hit a stump or something. Actually the first thing I found was the wasps that had made their new home under the motor cover.

So my first question.

When removing the steering bracket that is under the steering wheel, where it is attached to the boat with 3 bolts, the bolts were shoulder bolts and were bottomed out against the shoulder, giving the bracket a tiny amount of play in it. I am sure this has never been apart and came from the factory that way, and must have rattled some. They don't need to have any play do they?

Second question.

I am sure there are some slow rivet leaks in this boat. I was planning on using Gluvit to seal them before painting.
Since I am going to repaint the inside and outside of this boat, starting with Zinc Chromate Primer, then paint, would I use the Gluvit before or after priming the inside of the boat or just skip the Gluvit altogether?

Thanks in advance, Mike

Nice find, nice boat. You have a good plan in hand. What brand outboard is it? The Gluvit can will probably tell whether/how to use it with paint. Your steering cable should be free moving, and no play in the connections...helm or anywhere else. Sounds like someone used whatever bolts were at hand.

Re: 16' Grumman Restoration

She's a solid-looking hull begging to be restored and fixed up:D

Is that a 35 or 40hp Johnson/Evinrude? It looks like a 35 and that should push her at a pretty clip.

Is the hull a modified V? Looks like a bow-mounted MinnKota would be an easy installation and the console is a nice design.

Grumman is known for durability and toughness(aren't all aluminum boats?) so don't baby her too much:)

Re: 16' Grumman Restoration

The motor is a 1985 60 hp Evinrude. I got he boat from the original owner
(my cousin) and I actually helped rebuild the power head about 10 years and 50 hrs of use ago. I haven't tried to start it up yet. I figured I would address the gearcase first.

I think you could call it a modified V hull ? I attached a pic.

I also built the floor that is in it about the same time as rebuilding the motor. When I get it out I will post pictures. it is made of aluminum tractor trailer side panels and Z braces. It is not actually attached to the bottom of the boat but provides a flat floor. I want to go thru it and redo all of the rivets on it, and also try to figure out a good surface for it. The floor has always been kind of slippery and a little noisy.

Is there a way to remove dents like the one pictured? it is not as bad as it looks in the pic but if i can remove it I will.

I also have a small crack or tear in the transom to address.

From what I understand dents in aluminum are awfully difficult to remove. The hull is not a modified V, from the picture it looks like a standard flatbottom jon boat.

That 'rude 60hp will really get you going i bet. I built the same style flooring for my 12' only I used wood sealed and stained. Have you considered wooden decking or bedliner spray for that flooring?

Foam Question

Foam Question

I need to add some foam or flotation to the sides of this boat. It has some foam underneath the false sides of the boat. It is about 2" thick but is the kind of foam that must have been installed before they riveted the cover over it. It is open from the bottom so is there flexible type sheets of foam? or is there a good spray foam I could use? I do not want to have to drill and install all new rivets just to add a little foam where the original has worked itself loose in some places.

Also I built a new outboard motor stand to use while sanding and painting my boat. i attached a picture. i hope you all like it.

One more is there a way to fix the broken piece on the lower part of the gearcase pictured here?

Nice motor stand...the wheels will make moving her around pretty convenient:)

Unless you get some good responses in this thread I would advise you to post this question with more pictures in the Johnnyrude motor repair section. The gurus that monitor that section of the forums should have some good advice(I don't know myself...not much for fixing motors but I am learning).

As far as the foam...would it be possible to buy the pink/blue waterproof foam from Home Depot/Lowe's and cut it into smaller pieces to fit where you need? Some more pictures of the area that you want to insert the foam may help with ideas. Spraying may be easier, not sure if the spray is as waterproof as the other stuff.

Is there a good way to make an old steering cable housing look new? Also what is the proper way to lubricate or grease the cable?
Thanks,Mike

A couple more pics

A couple more pics

Ok I finally got the boat completely stripped and the gearcase disassembled.

I also got in trouble yesterday with my SO. I made the stupid mistake a couple of years ago of deciding to live in a Condo instead of a house. That decision resulted in me getting rid of almost all of my tools, work benches, sanders, sprayers, ect.
So guess what I have been doing the last couple of weeks? I have been buying all of my missing tools. I am becoming buddies with the USPS and UPS delivery drivers. Well when three seperate boxes showed up all on Friday at the same time I think she figured out what I was doing. i can't wait to see her face when I start ordering all of the parts and pieces needed to put it all back together.

Ok another question.
Where is there a good place to buy foam that comes in sheets and is still bendable enough to fit up in the side of this boat and what kind should I buy?
The foam that is installed in it now is loose and falling apart, but not wet.

Any advice on painting the hood cover? and a good place to get the decals and emblems I need.

Thanks, Mike
