First big boat or at least big compared to my other boat, anyways I am currious whether my 55lbs thurst Minnkota would be suficate to use as a trolling motor for my boat or do I need to go gas power.
Again it's a 16 foot closed bow and a v-hull with a 85 Merc that the majority of fishing will be done on lakes in Alberta.

I have a 40lb Minn Kota on my 15' bass type boat with a 55hp Johnson on it. It does OK with the speed but by no means quick. It moves the boat with 2 people aboard about as fast as you can swim, mabey just a tick slower!

I had a similar setup for my 18' Starcraft. I loved the quietness of the electric, but I could only troll for about 3 hours max before the battery went dead. Then it would take 8 to 10 hours to recharge. I had to go to a gas motor to get a full day of trolling in. Now if your not going to troll, and use the electric to position along the shoreline like in bass fishing, it would be great. I still use my electric for that kind of fishing.

Re: 16' V-hull and electric trolling motor

I have used this motor for a season on my 13' pontoon boat and never did see the battery indicater move off full charged mark. I know that I am not even close to compairing apples to apples here but 3 hours, wow thats low.

Well 3 batteries it is.

I would hate to have to go gas for trolling, after enjoying a season of electric trolling would feel like a step backwards. They are just soooooo quiet.

Plus it would look a bit over the top to have 3 motors hanging off the back of the boat or would it. :D
