I am thinking about buing a 1969 larson, model volero ( $800 for boat and tandom axle trailer) It has a Mercrusier 160 hp I/O . The engine is frozen and the oil pan has lots of water. I found a 165 Mercruiser motor. Is it possible to enterchange parts ? Also when I talked to a boat repair person about the heads, he explained about the older heads needing to be converted for unleaded gas ( air ports ? ) . It seems that the parts (NAPA marine catalog ) all the parts are the same , just some small differences. THe outdrive looks likes its in great shape. I have checked the oil and pulled the drive to inspect.

All you need to do is have a car rebuild shop put hardened valve seats in the head. A motor that old should need a valve job by now anyway. Those old Volero's were nice boats. Check to see that the inner hull is not water logged.<br />...have fun...corm

the 160 an the 165 were same motor...just different ratings on different years....if the 165 is out of a 1976 boat it has hard seats on exh valves already....if not do the head or buy valvetect and dope the fuel.....cost difference depends on how much time you spend on the water.
