165 and 228 made 1 outdrive

I've got a 165 that was pouring oil out the outdrive, wouldn't shift, and a crack in the foot. Took a good 228 housing, installed my 165 gears, replaced both shift cables (through transom and to controls), new bellows, new gimbal bearing. Used the 228 lower unit and prop that came with it. Took it out a few days ago, it did fine. Looks like I need to replace the impeller (it was supposed to already been done), Never ran hot, got warm enough to make me uncomfortable.

My question is this, will it hurt anything to run the 228 lower unit with my 165 motor. As the 228 is off a V-8, and I'm running a I-6. Also what prop would some of you recommend for a good all-around performance and tube pulling prop.

Any and all help is always appreciated.

I see a lot of problems.

Did you have all the special tools and manuals to set all the gear heights, rolling torques and backlash settings?

Merc used the 1.65 ratio on the 6 cylinders because the 6 does not have the torque of a V8, so yes, that will be a problem too. While it will work on your engine, it won't be as efficient at getting on plane or top speed. Kind of why you need the right ratio.

Yes sir I did reuse the 1.65 to 1 gears. Also set the rolling torque to what the old drive was. The back lash setting I used grease against the gears like setting up a vehicle rear-end, to make sure the gears were seating fully and not rolling on the heel or toe.
