Have a 74 165hp. Bought a new engine coupler but the promblen I'm having is I can't get the intermedate shaft to go all the way in the new coupler. I've been looking for a new drive shaft but there pretty hard to come by. Can I use a different engine coupler and shaft from a different year omc.

look up the proper part numbers on shop.evinrude.com for your 74 165- if you have the right shaft and the right coupler, they'll fit together correctly

Check your alignment. If your alignment is off at all and you do get the shaft in your coupler will last less then one trip.

Didn't know there is any alignment on the omc. Whats happening is the new engine couple slides fine on the shaft when out of the boat. I bolt the engine to the housing and the shaft slides in but there's maybe a 1/4in it needs to before it meets the inner bearing carrier. It was fine before I change the coupler witch the splines were bad.

Use part number 982458 for 1973-76 Chevy V- 8. Use part number 982511 for 1973-76 100, 120, 140, & 165 hp inline stern drive.. Use part number 982458 for 1973-76 Chevy V- 8. Use part number 982511 for 1973-76 100, 120, 140, & 165 hp inline stern drive.

I see the 982511 number changes up to an obsolete shaft and coupler that was $700 before it went NLA

I think you're going to have to do some field engineering - measure what needs to come off the end of the intermediate shaft if that will solve things and take it to a machine shop (will probably have to be ground as spline will be hardened), or keep an eye out for the old vintage coupler, or modify the coupler, matching it to the old one. There's no "in the box" fix. Measure twice, cut once.
