hello everyone. i have a 165hp merc. and it won't start. i installed a new starter, coil, wires, plugs, cond., points, dis. cap, rotor, and a relay. the carb does have fuel. the engine turns over. i have NO spark in the wires. the coil also does not give spark. i then exchanged the the coil thinking it was defected with a new one and i have the same problem. i'm pretty sure its something real small but i can't figure it out. can someone please help me. thank you

Ok, so we're working on a GM 250 six. First, use a test light and confirm that you are getting juice to the "+" side of the coil when the key is on, and when the key is to start. If that checks out, use the test light again, but hook the ground clip to a positve lead, example, the "+" side of the batt. Then put the other end of the test light on the "-" side of the coil. Have a helper turn the engine over, and if everything is ok, the light should flash everytime the engine fires, or gets spark. If all that happens, you should be getting a spark. If that test doesn't work, your points aren't closing right, check the gap with the cam opening the points, should be around .015?, check your book. Also, when they close, make sure they are centered on each other. The points may have a glaze on them too, use a business card, or point file to freshen them up. Also, you could have broken or damaged wires in the dist itself, make sure the leads are clean and tight.
Good luck
