My friend has a 25 feet boat with twin OMC 165 electric stringers. I take it for a spin now and then. I never go beyond 1500 rpm, since it's not my boat. (I don't take any chances with this fragile old setup).

We clean the thermostats now and then, since a small piece of rust hinders the thermostats of closing completely, causing the temp to stay very low (I can hardly see the needle move on the instrument)

Anyway, when my friend takes it out, he often goes at 3000 rpm for a longer time. And when he slows down, one engine(PORT) dies and cannot restart, before it has cooled for 1/2 an hour or so. When I take the boat out and go at 1500 RPM, it will run forever with no problems.

We have tried to switch ignition coil from one engine to the other, but the fault didn't move. I have also soldered the two metalparts on the rotor in the distributor together, since I have seen that a bad connection here can cause a hot engine to die.

Both engines has Hot-spark electronic ignition. The fuelpumps are (probably) the originals from 1976. An auto mechanic has told that old(worn) fuel pumps can malfunction when hot.

We will try and switch the fuelpumps, this coming weekend. But I would like to hear some opinions regarding old fuel pumps. Can they cause a problem like this?
