I was hoping someone would have a wiring diagram for a 1972 mercruiser 4.1 L6 250 cid motor with a pre-alpha stern drive. I just spent weeks fixing a fuel system issue and now my engine wont run at all. Fuel is not the problem. However, I think I may be getting some off information from my Clymer book on the location of the wires coming from the ignition coil, and distributor, thanks

There should be 3 brown wires to the - side of the coil.....
1 connects to the dist, 1 connects to the shift interrupt, 1 goes to the harness plug.....
I'd look at the interrupt ter switch to see if it is stuck.....
There should be a tan wire from the + side to the 'R' terminal on the starter motor.....
Hope this helps.......:)

This may not be your exact wiring diagram for your engine, but the ignition part is the same.
I't a big file so you can actually read it, so I will just post a link to it.

Re: 165 L6 Electrical problems

Hey thanks very much guys I really appreciate the help. This however makes the problem a bit stranger. Don the link you sent me is the identical wiring diagram to the one in my clymers guide i thought may be mistaked. The really strange thing is that i ran my boat all last season with the two dark wires on the - side, the wire from the distributor to the + side and the other two to the + side as well. When I was given the boat that was the configuration they were in and I assumed since it ran that it was correct. Thanks again, and I'll be sure to check that switch while I re-organize this mess !!
