I've got a 165 outdrive that is needing rebuilding. Found a good 228 outdrive for very little money, that is in great shape. I know the gear ratios are different, the 165 is 1:65 to 1, the 228 is 1:50 to 1. Will it bolt up and mount properly? If so, will the different gear ratios harm my boat? Not looking for massive speed or massive power.

Any and all help is always appreciated.

Thanks,

yes it will bolt up. Yes it will harm the engine to have the wrong ratio of outdrive. Lugging an engine under load is not good for it at all.

The difference in ratio is all in the upper. The 2 lower units are identical.

That being the case then I should be able to just swap the upper gear housings. My lower is where the problems are at. I should be able to reseal my upper and proceed on.
