Hi everyone. I have a 77' SeaRay with a gm straight 6 250. How do you remove and replace the V belt on the front of the engine. I have belt loose and the the 2 bolts the mount the engine to the front bracket removed. The spacer then comes out but I still can't get the belt past the pullys and the engine mount. Do I have to take the engine mounts completely off and support the motor up just to change out the V belt. The current belt is fine, its just about 20 years old lol. Thanks for the help.

I hate doing this as its always a pain. But you need an extra body to do this and a couple of 2x4's (or some sort of block to build up on for leverage) and a fllor jack handle (or some sort of 2" pipe about 3' long). Your extra hands will need to lift the port side of the engine with the pipe, using the block of wood for leverage enough to get the belt thru between the mount and the engine.

I put 2 belts in, and keep 1 zip-tied to the bottom of the bildge, so if I'm out by myself, I dont have to take the motor off the mounts, and can just slide the new belt up. (I've been there at 2am by myself with a lighter as my flashlight trying to get home)

Wow, that's kinda what I thought was going to have to happen. Can I get away with taking the 4 aft facing bolts off the front motor mount? Then jack it up? Do I need to take the rear ones loose? Can I do this with the outdrive on? Looks like lots of fun! Lol that would be a dumb reason to get stranded out on the water. Thanks for the reply.

You only need to work on the front of the motor. Do not touch the rear. And yes you can do this with the Drive on. I have always done this when the boat is in the water (not intentional, just when I realize the belt needs replacing).

Take the 2 horizontal lag bolts out that go thru the spacer on the port side of the motor. Then slightly loosen, make sure not to remove the starboard side bolts. You do not have to touch the center nut on the mounting bracket. once the spacer is out and starboard side is slightly loosened, you will be able to get the belt in place. Now is when your friend needs to use the block of wood and the pipe to shim the motor up while you slide the belt in. Overall the job should not take you more than 30-45 minutes. I'd take pictures, but motor is not in the boat
