17 ' invader ,lost in the detail,got pics,need painting advice

Hello All,thanks for a great forum,I am trying to fair the hull for painting.I have several nicks and gouges in the chine and can't seam to find the right method to reshape them after applying my fairing compound. I have tried using a DA sander,a hand block and even a body file but after sanding the gouges seam to come back and I can feal that the lines are not straight.Can any one tell me how to bring the detail back after applying the fairing compound.Thanks for any input.

Is all of the compound coming out of the nicks when you go over it? To get a very consistent smooth surface, you need to hand-sand with a long sanding block or "blocking". The problem with the DA and short blocks is they dig in, and you end up with the dips that you originally had.<br /><br />If the fairing is coming completely out, did you prep the surface before using the product?

Thanks for the input guys,I wish I would have found this forum before I got this far so I could have put up some before pics.Anyway I will try to post some pics of the current stage as soon as i can figure out this camera,Thanks

ok,I think I got it faired out well enough to paint thanks to a longer sanding block,but I need advice on roller selection.<br />what mat roller,high ,low or short pile or should I use a foam roller<br />also what type of brush should I use

I just painted my tinny with Rustoleum and the foam roller worked best for me. It spread the paint out with fewer air bubbles than the lowest roller I could find. Your choice of brush is very important. Get a "professional grade" brush and you won't be sorry you spent a few extra dollars. 3 or 4 inch wide horsehair. Only roll on a small area (3-4 sq. ft) and then lightly go over it (tipping) with your brush. If you do a large area, the paint will start to set up and make it harder to tip.

bitsnpieces,<br /><br />I just went through the brush selection process, what I wound up with was a 4" "badger hair" brush, thats right badger hair, sounded weird to me. I was also told ox hair was just as good. I know West Marine sells the badger hair, they are a little pricey (sp?), around $25. I do know I tried a chinese bristle and was disappointed, perhaps it was me. I don't know about the horse hair brush, like Fisherman Jeff suggested, I think the important thing is that it be a natural bristle.<br /><br />Peace.<br /><br />Ed.

Thanks Guys,how about those tiney holes that appear after you paint with primer.Looks like voids in the original resign.How and what is the best way to fill and level them

bits...<br /><br />I filled mine with epoxy and microbaloons, before I primed. There were some that showed up after priming, I sanded the primer down, re-filled holes and re-primed.<br /><br />Peace.<br /><br />Ed.
