I just bought a pontoon and it has a 17p prop. I am new to this and could I go to a different prop? Its has a 150 eveinrude on it and is 24ft and fiberglass toons. Also On the back side of the prop on the nut side there is like a black cone that fits over the housing. The prop he have me does not have that and does it need to have it on there? Thanks

Re: 17 p prop

Certainly you can go to a different prop. You need to visit the Iboats Marine Store and look at the props there. The page has links you can click on which will introduce you to the effects of differing numbers of blades, different pitches and aluminum vs stainless steel. Read that and then come back for more specific guidance.

We need to know what the specified RPM is at wide open throttle and then what RPM you actually get at wide open throttle. The difference between the two can be adjusted by changing the pitch of your prop. How big is your prop? 3 or 4 blades? How much space is there around it before it physically hits something on your outdrive?

If you tell us what your max rpm and speed is lightly loaded.
A gps will give to most accurate speed. You shouldn't make any changes without your present specs.

You are asking if you can go to a different prop and the answer is "certainly". But you failed to mention why you think a prop change is necessary. For all you know you may already have the best prop. Read the READ THIS FIRST sticky at the top of this forum. Without WOT rpm numbers with your current prop we can't begin to help you.
