I am presently in the process of restoring a 1986 17' Sea Nymph backtroller. Today I cleaned out all of the old (waterlogged) foam. (Probably 150 lbs of water). Okay, now that that is done, what do I replace it with? Since I have it stripped down I will go ahead and replace all the live well hoses and wiring so there is no great hurry for the foam, but I am stumped, not sure what products are out there.

One other issue, I need to get beneath the front deck (More foam) where the front live well and dry storage are. What is the best way to do this?

Thanks for any help you can give me on this

I've heard some guys use foam pool noodles, others use pink foam sheets from Home Depot/ Lowes. I would look up Jasoutside's Sea Nymph rebuild, he replaced all the foam in his as well.

Personally I would use the two part pour in foam,..

I think it fills nooks and cranny's better providing for more floatation,...

Floatation doesn't seem all that important until you need it, And then you really need it!!!,...

And Jas built some of the 'framing' and structure out of the rigid foam. Further increasing the amount of flotation foam in his SN.

We will need to see pics of your front deck to formulate a plan of attack for disassembly.

Since you live in Ind., I suggest the pink or blue rigid sheet foam insulation for floatation. The expanding foam is good stuff, but you need temperatures in the 80's for maximum expansion of the foam.

Welcome to I boats---lots of great info here, members are great. Most do not use pour foam as the same thing will happen---it will waterlog in time. I am doing a sea nymph now, a 1985 175 GLS, I am using the blue sheet foam they sell at the big blue box store.
It is a pain in the butt to cut it to fit but it won't waterlog and easy to work with. It is way cheaper than the pour foam too. I will use the pour foam to hold in my gas tank only. There are lots of foam examples here...pool noodles, empty soda jugs, etc. Check out my 1966 Chrysler polara 254 that I completed 2 years ago. Good luck.

As to the foam question, I will be dealing with this same issue soon and have already decided that I will be going the pour route. Like your 17' Backtroller my 16' Alumacraft is primarily a fishing rig. I feel that the pour in is much quieter and works as a better sound barrier than the cut up, stuffed in sheets. It wont be shifting around and rubbing against it's self. More expensive, yes, but to me worth it.

Best I can tell you is that in order to access that bow foam the decking is going to have to be removed one way or another.

I have noodles in mine but I don't think I'd go that route again. Some research someone on here did has me questioning how much they can really float. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably go with a hybrid foam board/pourable foam solution.

Re: 17' Sea Nymph rebuild

Thanks to all who were kind enough to reply.............As of right now, I am going the foam board route and using the expandable foam only around the edges to keep movement to a minimum. (May use a little liquid nails between the sheets to keep it rigid).

There really was not too much foam under the front deck. What was there as wet, but not nearly as wet as toward the center and rear of the boat.............I think I ended up taking about 160-170 of water soaked foam out of the boat.

The old foam is out and the new water lines and wiring are in. Just to head off any future problems, I tied the wiring to the water lines to eliminate movement and chafing.

The front decking was not too bad. I did not need to remove it after all. Once I got the Dry well and live well out, I could easily remove what little foam there was. It really was not wet enough to remove, but since I was there I did it anyway. No structure problems at all with the boat............I think it will be a good one.........A LOT OF WORK THOUGH!!!!!!

Hi Joel,

Actually, mine was not a complete rebuild..........It was in pretty good shape to begin with. However, I had to pull the floor to replace the water lines and ended up pulling all of the water logged foam out. Just about finished, ready to install new flooring and carpet just in time for prime fishing season.

Take Care

Great to hear you were able to access that bow area w/o to much difficulties. How do you plan on mixing the foam board and expandable pour in foam?

Has anyone tried imbedding the foam board into the pour in foam yet? Does it work?

Actually,I did not use the mix and pour foam. I cut foam board in 6" strips and layed them along the hull up to just below where the floor will be. I used foam adhesive between each layer of foam board. When all of this was in, I used the canned spray foam to fill in any voids and keep the movement to a minimum. It worked out really well and only used 3 large cans of the spray foam.

While I was at it, I build a new above deck dry storage and covered it with carpet. Looks really nice and is going to be very very functional.

I have an issue with the trailer........Looks like a bad ground somewhere. Running lights stay on with no problem, but turn signals and brake light are intermittent.............I HATE TRAILER WIRING PROBLEMS!!!!!!! Think I will install new lights while I am at it.

Everyone take care..............And hurry up! Fishing season is almost here!!

Well, figured out the trailer electrical problem............Too many lights!! Go figure!! The relay I bought for the wiring harness is limited to 3 amps.....So, ditched the relay and did a direct wire.......Works fine now.

SO, all done. She is ready and lookin great! I think once I get my savings replenished, I will look for a new or newer 40 HP motor.
