Still in the planning and measuring stage. Structurally, is 1708 equal to Woven? I read that it's easier to go over the stringers with 1708 since it bends around corners, so why not just use the 1708 on everything? I have soft spots in the deck, haven't ripped it out yet to check the stringers. Pretty sure they'll be rotten also. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!

Re: 1708 Biax vs. Woven Roving

They will both work, 1708 has become more popular in recent years and is a little easier to find now than it was before, it's stronger for the same weight and in some applications it may be a slightly easier to use, but that isn't always the case. Roving is less money and you can find it at just about any business that sells fiberglass supplies. 99% of all boats were built with roving, but about ten years ago more builders started using 1708.

Re: 1708 Biax vs. Woven Roving

hi....

the 1708 is a multi directional material.....thus making it stronger in several directions,,,,,,the woven is set at 90 degrees....so it is strong in 2 directions.

woven is basically an out dated product. however it still has some uses in the industry......but for boat building.....the 1708 is hands down the better product for just about every application.

the only area i use woven on a boat.....is on the deck ....but it is only a 6 oz woven....like a fine silk sheet.....this is called a finishing veil.....it makes everything smooth.
but has little structural value.
