175, 195, or 195 with fish package...warning: very long winded

Okay, all the boats I am looking at are 2008 models...being new..include galvanized trailers, and have out the door pricing (taxes, shipping, prep, safety equipment, liscencing). I'm torn in the end. I know a lot of people are going to tell me to go to a different manufacturer, but I shopped around all year, and nobody is touching these prices.

So the dilema, I can get the Bayliner 175, with aftermarket fish package (by dealer) including: Bimini Top, Fish Finder, 1 - downrigger, 2 rod holders, 1 wireless trolling motor (with mount), full width swim platform, and 1 casting chair (removable, bow mount) for approx: $18K out the door.

OR, I can get the 195 with rubber mat floor, full swim platform, bimini top, galvanized trailer, and all other standard equip for $22K out the door.

OR, I can get the 195 as above with the bayliner fish package (factory) including the items on the 175, but adding a full camper canvas package and all items are factory installed for $28K out the door.

Before you panic, these are all Canadian prices...I can't even buy a stingray, sea ray, doral, or even Tahoe(crap in my view, at least the ones I saw) boat (without the trailer) for these prices. So I've settled as this is all my budget will allow. Of note, all three boats are equipped with Merc 3.0, and Alpha 1 drives. The 175 has a carpet floor (likely wood under there from what I've read as it is glued down), both 195's have a rubber deck with the bow area being fiberglassed.

Although at a very very steep premium, the extra floor space in the 195's might come in handy. Also, in my thinking with approx. 1' more in beam and length the 195 would feel far more secure if the going got rough (lake ontario). My thinking is that the rubberized deck is ingenious and will likely last a lot longer then a carpeted wood deck. Admittedly a fibreglass insert would be optimum, but I am working with what is available at these prices on the dealer lot.

The fish package is a major plus, as it saves me drilling holes in a nice new hull, although I have a fish finder and trolling motor, the ones offered in the fish package are FAR superior to what I have, wireless trolling motor..nice!! The canvas camper set is also a major plus for the early spring and late fall fishing seasons, with a very nice bit of weather proofing for my sensitive side, and I know that doing it aftermarket would easily eat up the savings made by purchasing the base 195. Let`s not forget the factory live well as well...I almost did! None of the other two would have that, unless I made one...and I don`t do fiberglass.

ON THE OTHER HAND: the 175 is likely better suited to the smaller 3.0 engine and my budget! It is certainly more cost sensitive (a major bonus), but I am really unhappy with the carpeted floor, specially with the primary use being fishing...mmm...fishy carpet...yummy. However with the cost savings, I could pay to have the deck fibreglassed! I am not certain, but I still think I would feel more secure in the larger boat as well...any response from 175 owners would be greatly appreciated. Also, am an not sure if the 3.0 is really a good choice for the 195`s...input from those owners would be appreciated as well. Although the savings is nice, the thought of aftermarket equipment installed kinda doesn`t sit well, let alone the carpet..ugh...

All said and done: Primary use, small lake fishing, Secondary use, large lake fishing, and third, but not least, entertaining friends (festival of lights, cruising..etc). I don`t expect to be doing any water sports like skiing or tubing, possibly, but not likely. My friend has a perfect ski boat for that stuff...so the 3.0 might suit me just fine.

What do you guys think, is the larger boat with the fish package really worth 10G over the smaller boat with aftermarket stuff.

None of them are really suited for Ontario on a moderate to bad day. Just too small. Get in a blow, and they all will feel like rowboats.

Fishing? You already said it! Forget the carpet.

If you don't intend to water ski, then the 3.0 will do fine but you most likely will need to worry about trade or resale value in the future. And yes, it is highly likely that you will trade up. Most boaters do.

All things being relative, I spent last fall on Ontario in high winds...in...wait for it...a 13` 1976 G.A. Pauson fiberglass...mm...3` waves...fun. Even the OPP thought I was nuts. :D But saw I was in control and let me carry on. I grew up on Huron.

The new Bayliner 175 is a good boat. Bayliner has come a LONG way in the past years. I will comment that the 175 is small and it is IMO a lake boat for smaller lakes.

Trust me...... there are going to be alot of boats on the market due to the economy and these will be 07 and 08 models. If you have the income to dispose of I would shop and visit boat shows. Last years and even 07 models are sitting in dealer's lots.

If you buy now I bet that you will have "two foot fever" in less than one year....... wanting and looking for a boat 2 feet longer.

The 175 with 4 people can be very cramped.

Yeah, I think I`ve pretty much ruled out the 175. I didn`t mention that the goal is two boats :p. A small cruiser for me and the missus, and the fishing boat for me. So I`ll be doing the more then 2`ittus. This is just an entertaining boat for the time being, then a full time fishing rig from then on. New job pending...1 year, otherwise 2 or 3 years.

Boat show is this weekend (Toronto) will be there....shopping around with the numbers I have...I am no-ones fool.

I can understand wanting a brand new boat
But, everyone drives a used boat
with all of the used boats out there
and all of the owners almost begging for buyers
you will get a lot more boat for the money going after a 2 or 3 Y/O boat
many still have agood bit of factory warr. to boot
with the way the economy is I would not even think of going for a new one
just a quick look at one site and I saw at least 5, 20 footers, under 20,000.
all of them 2005 or newer

Fortunately the financial crisis is not anywhere near the level in Canada, as it is in the States. Or unfortunately, however you look at it. The slightly used boats are actually currently listed near or even more then these sale prices.

I've done plenty of research, and, basically anything used at a good price has been poorly or not maintained. Even a few listings with boats not winterized and needing new engine blocks...go figure. I don't want to buy someone else's first boat. There are some good deals out there, but typically I don't buy used, cars or otherwise. My current fishing boat was a trade for some aquariums I had finished with....so it gets the exception. I am in a position that I can make this choice, and thankful for it.

Have you ever read the Bayliner Review Threads? Great information written there and done by our own iboats people. ;) http://forums.iboats.com/Bayliner_Boats

On any of the Great Lakes, the weather can turn around pretty quickly, and not necessarily for the better. I have a 22' Mach I and I've been near-shore and headed in very hastily on Lake Michigan. Based on that experience and a couple others while boating on the Great Lakes, I've now also got a 30' Wellcraft with twins. I'd recommend you get as much boat as you can afford for any of the Great Lakes...

i am curious? why not come down to the states and get a new one, the exchange rate is still good, and you can get more deals down here. bass pro is selling off very cheaply, and like a previous poster said some dealers still have new 07's. it is not that long of a drive, i go to Dryden ON from Milwaukee WI 2 times a year. if it sames you big dollars. it is worth the drive. customs cannot be that bad.

Maybe it's a Vermont thing, but I would agree with above. My buddy just bought a used 19' fishing boat with a 70 outboard and only has a fraction of even those discounted new boat prices into it. A 19 is twice the boat of a 17, and there are plenty of "new" boats with old model years on their name plates right now.

A 22 footer on Champlain can get really small in 6-foot seas- I would go for the 195 hands down over the 175 if that is your choice, and I would stick to the $22K model, get them to include the trolling motor for the same price, and buy the accessories you want later.

Actually importing is a bit of a pain, certainly something I don't have time for, just got home now, and left at 7am. Most of the ministry offices are closed long before I am done for the day.

I am thinking the same, maybe just skip the camper back. I dunno. As for the Great Lakes, I am well aware of the weather changes. Any fishing I do there is typically very close to shore, in sheltered coves...within running distance to the nearest ramp. Thus I haven't really been looking at larger boats, and the 195 is about as big as will fit in my garage easily. The 205 may be an option, but the price jumps quite a bit. Ah...the boat show...can't wait. I am sure some other options will pop up...perhaps a nice deal on a Sea Ray or something..LOL. Thanks to everyone, your opinions are noted.

I would buy something old and cheap to start out with that has some size. See what you like about it, and what you don't, then invest in somethign you will keep for a long time.

Read my OP, did that, been there....I'll never recommend a new boater an old boat. Too much repair and maintenance, and possible safety problems. An inexpensive newish or new boat is the better way...IMHO. Also been boating for many years, and sick of buying other peoples headaches. Even the best survey misses stuff....or stuff about to break. I'm done with that sh*t.
