I have a 1991 evinrude 175, while out this weekend I lost power when wide open and with the motor trimmed up, The engine seemed to run fine at lower speeds with the engine trimmed in more of a middle posistion, any Ideas where to start looking. By the way my warning signal is working properly and never sounded. Thanks for any advice

Bassinbird64@aol.com

Re: 175 evinrude loses power

That sounds like cavitation. If the motor suddenly revs while the boat speed slows, that's more than likely what is happening. The prop is effectively losing its "bite". If you slow the motor (need to do that quickly anyway because it will overrev), you should feel the prop again begin to push the boat, and if you hold the speed down with that trim angle, you might avoid the problem. You mention the solution, though -- change the trim angle.

Bassinbird sound like you may have problem my dad
had on his evinrude 115. He had carbs. rebuild and it would only run at about 2200rpms.at WOT
keep checking and found the power pack had brock down. With new one it will git up and go now!
I also had to replace power pack on a 1990
evinrude 150 for high speed miss, They cost about $220.00 but look around there on hard to put on. hope this helps?

Hi, took the boat back out today and no matter what posistion the motor is in when it gets up around 4000 rpms the motor just bogs down and makes a kind of rattling noise. seems to run fine up to about half throttle.any suggestions would be helpful, thanks, bassinbird

What spark plugs are you using? What fuel? When you pull the plugs out do they all look the same?

Let us know!

spark plugs are ngk, usally run shell 93, pulled spark plugs today they are all the same, noticed water comeing from two small ports or holes right below the engine cover where the lower unit starts ,I'm not sure if this is normal, excuse my ignorance what are these holes? Thanks!

I'm not sure about the water leaks. But KGB (I mean NGK) plugs are not what you want to run in that motor. Stick with Champion and 87 octane with a good OE or Pennzoil Blend oil.

Good luck!

Re: 175 evinrude loses power

Bassinbird, The two holes are exhaust bypass ports and it's normal for water and exhaust to come out of these.
Take Dhadley's suggestion and get the right plugs. Use the 87 octane fuel too. This is what this engine was designed to run on. When you change the plugs make sure you have a strong blue fire on each cylinder. Try your motor again and if it still acts up try squeezing on the primer bulb and see if the motor picks back up. It sounds like you have a fuel restriction or your fuel pump is crapping out.
Good luck :)

Re: 175 evinrude loses power

I have a 175 evinrude as well and I had the same type of problem. What the problem with mine was the clamps on the fuel line. My engine would run fine on one tank, but when I switched to the other one, it would bog down at higher speeds. My Dad's boat did the same and this too solved his problems. If you are sucking air anywhere on your fuel line, it will starve your engine at higher speeds.

Re: 175 evinrude loses power

Hello, I put the new plugs in today, I don't have anyone today to turn the motor over while I check the spark, I did start the boat and it had a miss at idle pumping the primer bulb helped,Is the primer bulb suposed to stay hard? Mine keeps getting soft at Idle. Is this a sign the fuel (vro) pump is bad? I checked all hoses, connections and vent line and everything is fine. Thanks for all your help!

Re: 175 evinrude loses power

You got a model number. The XP probley was 90 degree. The engines do not have same ignition system. It is inportant to know which system you are working on.

Re: 175 evinrude loses power

Hi everyone, Just took the boat out, I changed the spark plugs, added some fuel system cleaner, and rerouted the fuel line so that the bulb was in more of a horizontal posistion.Ran good even at high speed! Still seems like there is a slight miss, I'm going to replace the bulb tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

bassinbird
