Well i went out this weekend and put her in everthing was going great she started right up,smoked a little bit more than usually but idealed like a top,so i squezzed the primer bulb and everthing was fine no blubbers at all,so i took off and she blasted out the hole really good and the lake was perfect so i started trimming her up to let her eat,it was running awsome i got her up to around 60mph fast, and i thought i may just hit 70 at this rated:)then at 5300rpm she started rattling really loud and i looked back, when i did this god awfull POP happened and it came to a stop really quick:^i tried to turn it over but it was locked up big time and the shifter would'nt hardly move.and Dale that plastic rattling we was talking about wasnt there at all.so trolled over to the bank and fished back to the ramp, which was a litle over a mile maybe, well got back and started pulling the plugs and on number 6 there was metal,so i got to looking and there was alot of plastic in the bottom and i notice the peice under the shifter cables was broken, then i noticed the intake plate behind the #6 carb was cracked ,and the breather cover was about half off of 6 so i pulled it and there was metal and a hole like you woudnt believe.so i guess my question is what ya'll think happened leaned out in 6?i always heard it was 2 that blew most of the time.im not that mechaniclly inclined and this is way over my head, and theres nobody around here worth a crap on omc,so what ya think i should?money is tight right now so im going to do anything really quick, but just wanting some opions and thoughts.i always heard they run great before blowing.....but it wasnt a total lost i did catch a 5lb smally on the way back to the ramp.thanks for any suggestions.sorry for the long ramblings but its theraputicd:)

Dang Ron.....that SUCKS....BIGTIME!!:%

The rattling you heard may have been the rod cap coming lose just before it went through the wall.

Have pulled the head yet to take a look at the hole? May tell us more.

EDIT: Post your model number to Ron.

oh man.

can feel your pain.
yeah rodcap may be loose or broken off and pushed trough the crankcase.

i would or look for a new/used ph or part out the motor and get some money back.

Ooooouuuuch!

Powerheads are avialbale here on iboats. A PH replacement is doable, by a novice, with a good manual. I suggest oem manuals only, for that job.

I would suggest you remove the lower unit to make sure that did not grenade along with the engine. Stopping something that fast can cause problems, as you know.

i havent done anything yet,i'll get the model # tomarrow and post it,that seems like a pretty big job for me.i spun the prop and it makes a grinding noise in the gearcase.knowing my luck it probably blew it all to heck too.if i pull the heads what do i need to do?

There really isn't much sense in pulling the heads if the crankcase is cracked.

I still would pull the lower unit, it may be fine.

I feel your pain. i've only had one engine blow up on me. That was a 1969 3-cyl. "looper". It was my fault, the bottom carb was gunked.

I actually got quite a bit of money out of it by parting it out.

That sucks Ron. At least it happened during the winter and not in the spring or summer. You have a few months to work up a solution before the serious fishing starts up again. It's going to be a lot of work fixing that. You may be better of shopping for a used motor so you'll be ready for the spring fishing.

Ron....just a question or two...

Was your alarm system/horn working? Any problems before this happened?

Reason, if you decide just to get the block and add your current parts to it....carbs, pump, electrical.....you will want to know, if possible, if all the systems on the engine were working so you don't have a re-occurance if you use the current parts.

Re: 175 faststrike Popped..what i do?

the model # J175GLETR
The horn and alarm was working.nothing went off when it happened.the only other possible problem was a couple of months ago there was a little rattle like plastic fluttering at near wot?we thought it may be running a little rich, thats why i squezzed the primer bulb before i started to see if the motor would stall or blubber any and it didnt, the little noise wasnt even there.OBJ your right thats what ive been wondering too,i would really like to know what exactly caused or happened before i make a dissicion on rebuilding.
Also theres about 1/2"hole on the block i guess, up under and behind the number 6 carb that looks like something blew out.any idea what could have went there?its hard to get a pic of it with it all togeather.

Some failure analysis will help you determine what parts are still useable on the engine. Possible that the rattling was a prelude to the piston sticking in the cylinder from overheat/lack of lubrication. You may not get a horn with this. If the piston wedges (sticks) at high rpm, the rod may break, causing the end of the rod to go through the case. Possible things to look for: carbon around the skirt of the piston-blocking lubricant to the rings, debris in the carb jets-blocking fuel/lube to one cyl, timing too far advanced, water in the fuel. You might want to check the carbs first, then take a fuel sample.

If you are having trouble finding a good tech I'd suggest looking into sending the dressed powerhead to the folks at Mar-Fab in Sparta (since you're in Tenn anyway). They have some excellent techs there. If you send it dressed they may be able to help determine what went wrong. They'll also use any good pieces you still have. Hopefully the crank may still be useable, not likely but let's hope so.
