I have a 2000 175 hp Ficht with 130 hours on it and blew #4 cylinder recently. Prior to blowing motor would spitter and sput after runing a while. When I stopped and waited a few moments then recraked the motor would run good for a while again and then repeat problem. Later in the day after fishing for a while on the trolling motor when I cranked the engine it was slow to get on plane but would all of a sudden kick in and go. After traveling a short distance the motor would die. After the second time this happend and I went to crank the motor I heard the knock. The motor has 130 hours on it and the mechanic told me the computer showed it had over heated 27 times. The alarm has never went off on this motor. What could have caused the over heating? Had good water pressure. I suppose the over heating caused the failure of #4 cylinder. Extended warrant does not cover pre-detonation. If I replace the piston could I have the same problem again? How do I determine what actually caused the failure? Injector maybe? How do I check injectors. Please, someone help me....Model 175FPLSS Ser G04744950

--------------------
Dennis Hollis
Director District #40
American Bass Anglers

Re: 175 Ficht

If you don't fix the orginal problem that piston or any of the others could certainly fail. Does the self-test buzzer work when you turn the key on? If not, fix it. They can be tested by removing them and suspending them in a pan of water. Use a thermometer to check water temp. DO NOT let the thermostat sit on the bottom of the pan -- suspend it. Thermostat replacement would certainly be in order regardless what you find but at least you prove or disprove it was the thermostat. Having sucked up mud or sand at some time could have clogged the water passages which even if a little water was getting through, the gauge could still show normal water pressure. A lean running injector could also cause the problem. You will need to disassemble the motor anyway so pull the head and check the water passages.

Thanks Upinsmoke. Yes the self-test buzzer works. I am getting a new power head which should take care of any blockage problem. But how do I check the injector to see if it was running lean.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I need all I can get to make sure this motor doesn't blow again.
