Re: 175 hp johnson

The only oil there is to drain is in the lower gearbox, and I would drain and refil with fresh lower unit oil. If you are talking about the oil for the gastank I would add it now, and if you don't want to for some reason want to add it now make sure the motor is disabled, or clearly marked to that effect. No quicker way to kill and outboard motor than to run it without oil. I don't know the capacity of the tank, nor what crud you are talking about under the boat.
Maybe someone else can help you with the crud and capacity...just a thought :)

The reason for changing the gear oil now is that if you have any water in it it may freeze. Make sure you use new seals on the fill & drain plugs.

I would also suggest that you put some fuel stabilizer in the fuel tank and run your motor until you are sure that some of this fuel gets through the carbs. Also it might be a good time to replace your water seperators/fuel filters.

Can't help on the fuel tank capacity.

Oh - And a big welcome your way.

Hobo,
Welcome
Check this out http://www.iboats.com/basics/guide_winterization.html
it gives you a load of info on getting your boat ready for the off season ( :) which we are so lucky not to have down here in hurricane central :) ). As far as the crud, I assume it is just pond scum (greenish-brown), I would use a good cleaner made for marine use. Remember not to wax your hull below the water line as it affects performance.
