I bought a used boat last week and it came with a 175 HP Mercury outboard motor. When we start the motor with the lower unit in water it spits a little bit of water out of the water discharge hole. It takes about 3-4 minutes before there is a steady stream of water flowing. Is this normal or should I be replacing the water pump? The person that sold me the boat said that he replaced the water pump two years ago.

Is it easy to replace the water pump and other seals in the lower unit?

I owned a 140 HP Johnson 25 years ago and when it was running it always discharged a steady stream of water; I just don't know if Mercury motors operate differently.

this may be due to a thermostat opening afetr warm up if your engine has one. being the water pump is 2 years old I reccommend it be changed it.s not to hard to do just make sure you put the unit up in Foward or Neutral whichever the shifter position is in when you take the unit off good luck

What is your engine s/n? We can get you the service manual online and the parts listing.

the serial number is: 06363201 (1996 175L) I found this number on the engine support bracket.

Thanks for helping.

fish;

Do you think the number could be 0G rather than 06? Pretty sure it is and the engine comes up as a model:

1175412SD MERCURY 1996 175

Patrs listing:

Service manual P/N 90-824052R3

You can scroll down to the component sections in red and read them online or individualy save them to your computer.

Please let me know about the s/n.

You were correct with the serial number, it is 0G......

Any thoughts on the cooling water discharge when it is cold versus hot?

Again thank you

All the water for the tell-tale goes through a thermostat first. It won't stream steady until the engine is up to operating temperature. If it's in good tune and the water is very cold, it could be a long time.

The stream should be quite uncomfortable, but not immediately scalding. (145?)

Thanks again for the quick response; that makes me feel better. I put my hand on the engine to make sure it was not getting to hot; almost to hot to touch gefore the water stream started to flow steady. I will still replace the water pump since it is two years old.
