175 Mariner, Pee slow and spits

Hi guys. A little history first. Motor was overheating (alarm) last fall. Temp gauge pined all the way over at WOT. So, put in new water pump kit, the whole thing, housing, plates, gaskets, cup, impeller, etc. Also new temp gauge sending unit and new stats. OK, the alarm no longer goes off at WOT, but! The gauge still reads real high at WOT, still pinned all the way over to the right. When the motor is cold, I started it up, let idle, started timing the pee steam. It took it 15 seconds to even spit a drop. From 15 seconds on it would spit drops of water (no steam at all) till about 2 1/2 minutes, then it was spitting a interrupted steam. My question is, do you guy's think the poppet valve might be sticking closed or not opening all the way, making the motor and gauge run warmer than normal at WOT? If so, how do you test the poppet valve to make sure it is working? If you replace it, what do you replace? In other words, what goes wrong with it? The diaphagm, spring, etc.? Also, is it normal for the pee steam to act that on a Mercury? To be that slow, and just spitting a few drops for that long? All help is appreciated. Dave

I don't know anything about your motor, but my Mercury 850 has a steady stream all the time. The stream also increases at higher speeds.

Most of the V 6's have the P stream come AFTER the T-stats, NO flow until the stats open.

T-stats maintain idle and off idle temps until RPM and water pressure rise to open the poppet valve.

Inspect the water pump to be CERTAIN that all is well at that end.

Check the T-stat opening temp in a pan of water on the stove, they should begin to open about 135 - 140 and be fully open by 140 - 145, any later replace them.

Poppet diaphragms can develop a hole and fail, inspect it carefully or replace, make sure that the valve itself is not accumulated 'crustyness' or mineral deposits that restrict its opening fully.
