I have a 175 merc that I got not too long ago and started to fix the gearcase which needs a clutch dog replaced.. I am also going over everything else while it is not being used. If you could, look at some of these pics and tell me what exactly they are, because I have no clue.

The first two pics will be the thermostats, which seem to be corroded completely away, just wondering what other damage could be lerking.

The 3rd pic is a wire that has been cut right under the first spark plug on the port side. there is also one on the starboard side same color thats hooked up.

The 4th pic is a metal bracket that I am not sure what its for.

The 5th pic is a plastic piece that i have no clue what it is.

The 6th pic is a pink wire comming off the main harness thats not hooked up. Couldnt get the pic up.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. -Justin

Re: 175 Merc pics and questions

Third picture is cut temp sensor wire. There should be a tan/blue wire on each head, and they will be connected together and run to the hot buzzer.

Forth picture is a steering component (Power steering??) You may remove it. I don't know what is fifth picture. Not enought detail in the picture for me to locate the context. Sixth picture is missing.

Put in some new thermostats and a new waterpump impeller.

I would pull the water jacket covers on heads and clean em out!! Install new t-stats and impeller. The 3rd picture is sending unit for a guage ,not for hot horn,4th picture is dual steering tube bracket and 5th is lever to release front cover. It is spring loaded but bet the spring is rotted.6th pic missing but could it be a faded purple wire? pull tape on harness back a bit to see.

Re: 175 Merc pics and questions

alright. appreciate the help. as for the dual steering, i think i should hook it up. ive got a bad feeling about a cable breaking at 65mph.. would it be better to go with the dual or hydraulic? heard hyd steering you lose the feel or somethin.. its a fast boat, and its hard as hell to steer at speed... dont care for it. also it chine walks so would hydraulic be a bad choice because of that?
