Re: 175 mercury Black max
Delta Breeze,

The 'rudes (and Jonnies) have megga problems with their oil injection system. Mercs aren't plagued by that. The 'locals' who tell you to remove it are speaking with 'generalized' knowledge. I have worked on many of these engines and haven't had one failure. The only thing to be aware of is the oil injection system warning module. I've seen a few of them fail. When you turn the key on, you should get a couple of beeps, indicating that the module has done its selftest and passed. If you don't hear those initial beeps, don't start the engine. If in doubt, put some oil in the fuel.

The way it works is as follows.

The Oil Injection Warning Module monitors a float switch in the small oil tank under the engine cowl, the oil pump rotation and the engine speed, via a green wire from the output of one of the power packs (switch boxes). It compares the engine speed with the rotational speed of the oil pump. If an abnormal condition is detected then the warning beeper is sounded. For low oil level in the tank the beeper is sounded slowly, a beep every couple of seconds. If the rotational speed doesn't match the engine speed then the beeper is sounded rapidly. The last possible condition you could hear is a continuous tone from the beeper. That is an overheat. The oil warning and the temperature switch share the wire.

Hope this helps.

Chris.........
