Hey all,
sorry for the relist I just wanted to know if anyone is familiar with these motors.I have been an I/O boater for a long time and know these "High perf" O/B can be expensive. It does still have the oil injection unit and locals say that should be the first thing to remove, retune the carb and keep mixing oil by hand.I'm familiar with smaller o/b and have a few on differant boats but got burned once on 235 rude.what should the compressions be and what else should I look for on the engine? Are these good motors??Thanks for your help Iboaters The Delta Breeze

Delta Breeze,

The 'rudes (and Jonnies) have megga problems with their oil injection system. Mercs aren't plagued by that. The 'locals' who tell you to remove it are speaking with 'generalized' knowledge. I have worked on many of these engines and haven't had one failure. The only thing to be aware of is the oil injection system warning module. I've seen a few of them fail. When you turn the key on, you should get a couple of beeps, indicating that the module has done its selftest and passed. If you don't hear those initial beeps, don't start the engine. If in doubt, put some oil in the fuel.

The way it works is as follows.

The Oil Injection Warning Module monitors a float switch in the small oil tank under the engine cowl, the oil pump rotation and the engine speed, via a green wire from the output of one of the power packs (switch boxes). It compares the engine speed with the rotational speed of the oil pump. If an abnormal condition is detected then the warning beeper is sounded. For low oil level in the tank the beeper is sounded slowly, a beep every couple of seconds. If the rotational speed doesn't match the engine speed then the beeper is sounded rapidly. The last possible condition you could hear is a continuous tone from the beeper. That is an overheat. The oil warning and the temperature switch share the wire.

Hope this helps.

Chris.........

I love these engines...

They are great motors...
The compression you should see in all cylinders is somwhere between 110-130psi... With no more than 10psi difference between them all.

Diffinitely check compression and the lower unit oil... If the oil looks milky, water has gotten into the gears...
And purchase a spark gap tester and check for spark on all cylinders while the engine is at idle...
At least start there...
If you have any more questions let me know...
I have the same engine myself....
Good luck.

A lean condition or carbon under the rings are the two most common issues that grenade most outboards, If you decarb and change all the fuel lines and filters, rebuild all the carbs, fuel pump and water pump, you will have an engine that will perform wonderfully for years.Changing your fuel lines will assure you have no peices flaking off and cloging a jet which will cause a lean condition in one cylinder or more. I use a synthetic oil in mine, (not necesary), but it gives me a great peice of mind and it runs better, and there is visably less smoke.
