I am rebuilding a 175, and I didn't mark the carbs when I removed them fromm the intake. Is there a way I can tell which one is for the top middle and bottom. My repair manual says they are jetted different, but doesn't say how to tell, just to number them. Should have read that before i removed them. Lesson Learned

Re: 175 Rebuild Question

What year is the engine??

Take out the idle and main jet plugs. The main jets will come out with the plugs and the idle jets will remain in the carb. The size of the orfices will be etched on the jets, then use your mercury manual to find out which carb goes where.

For the rebuild I would get rid of the vent jets completely and you MUST increase the size of your main jets by .002", possibly even .004" because depending on the year (mid to late 80's black max) some were running lean with the factory jetting.
My engine also has the idle jets decreased by .002".

Re: 175 Rebuild Question

One more question, at least for now.

The assembly grease the mercury part number whatever, for the needle bearings on the rods and pistons, what type to use or what i should really say is do I have to go to a mercury dealer and get that special grease, or can I get a certain grease from say an auto parts store and use that? And if so what grease should I get.

Vaseline works
only reason u need grease is to hold into place and have a lube in there to help
