I'm considering a new Lund Fisherman 1750. Package deals are pretty much limited to Merc motors. The 1750 is rated at 135 hp. I'd like a standard 4-stroke (not Verado), but I think Merc only builds those up to 115 hp. Not looking at setting any speed records, but still want something to help beat the storm back to safe harbor. Would a 115 hp be okay with this boat?

I would say the 115 with the right prop and 6400 RPM would move you along fairly well.

My '04 Lund 1700 Angler SS w/ 115 4-stroke Johnson reaches 42 mph with a 13 x 21 stainless prop @ 6000rpm. Not a speed record setter but when cruising along, I don't feel like it's needing any help. Definitely feel I have a set up that will not leave me putting along in a storm.

Not sure the weight difference between my Angler and a 1750, but wouldn't think the new 1750 would be much more than 200-300 lbs heavier.

Re: 1750 Fisherman & Merc 115 hp

Thank you for your replies.

I think there's a good possibility I can fit the 1850 in my garage, but the problem is the hull is rated at 150hp. A 135 or 150 would be okay, but since Lund is mated with Mercury Marine, it would have to be an Optimax or a Verado. I'd prefer a normally aspirated four-stroke. Merc doesn't go any higher than 115 on those.

The 1750 is rated at 135hp, and from your responses it sounds like a Merc 115 four stroke would fit nicely.

The 2008 Lund brochure says Honda is available as an option. If true, one could hang a Honda 135 or 150 normally aspirated four-stroke on the 1850 Fisherman. Unfortunately, the local Lund dealer doesn't sell Honda motors, so he probably doesn't service them either.

The other boat I'm seriously considering is Alumacraft. It isn't tied to any engine manufacturers. A Trophy 185 with a Suzuki 150 four-stroke (or a Trophy 175 with a Suze 140) might be just the ticket. The local Alumacraft dealer does indeed sell and service Suzuki motors, and from what I've researched so far, Suzuki makes a killer four-stroke.

Re: 1750 Fisherman & Merc 115 hp

My father has a 1750 with a 115 Yamaha four stroke. It moves the boat pretty well...as stated above....probably in the 40-42 mph range. I have a 2001 1800 fisherman with a 150 XR6 (carb'd two stroke). It runs 46-47 mph...but I'm planning on getting a stainless prop for it since I've only owned it for a couple of months and would like to get a few hundred more rpm at the top end.

One consideration for the Trophy 185.....what about the 175 Suzuki? It is the same engine as the 150 except it has variable valve timing. The trophy is a pretty heavy boat....you might be more pleased with the extra oomph. Nice boat...it was on my short list until I found my 1800 Fisherman.

Good luck,

Wayne

I found and now have a 1700 Lund Fisherman with a 135 Honda. It moves the boat well and gets great gas mileage cruising around 30mph(about 6-7mpg) and is not overworked. To get speed a smaller motor has to work in a higher rpm range and than you drink more gas. Next summer if the predictions come true, gas mileage could really become an issue. As far as service, besides oil changes Honda is very reliable from my experience and what I have heard from others so I wouldn't worry to much about service. It's the same engine that I have in my car which is also very economical and reliable.

Yes, the Honda 135 is very intriguing indeed, especially since they are currently offering a $350 rebate (thru 2/29/08) and a 5-year warranty (thru 3/31/08).

This might be the option of choice since Lund does offer the Honda as an option. Ka-ching!!
