175HP EVI, Is it worth it?

I wanted to see if I could get a few opinions. I ran across a decent fixer upper boat with a 175hp v6 Evinrude. Guy said it was running good then starter was acting weird. I looked at it and noticed it was the crankshaft that broke just below the top flywheel that was the problem, not the starter. Bad news!!!

Anyway, guy said he would sell it even cheaper now, of course.

Any ideas what this would cost me in time, money, and frustration?

Not sure of year, awaiting model # from him. Guessing late 80's early 90's.

Around here(Boston) I see parts engines for approx $600.
I'd look for a parts engine for the shaft.

Cranks for the crossflows are not hard to come by and they are not real expensive. If you think you can tear it down and do the work, go for it. If it is the years you state, it should be a de-tuned 235 big bore crossflow with the bubble back. These had the large carbs and made lots of torque. They were under rated at 175. Since it's already a parts engine, ask the owner if he will let you pull the heads and have a look inside. If the cylinders and pistons look ok it could be worth buying. If the pistons/liners are scuffed and the heads damaged (pitted), adjust your the price as the lower unit is the only worthwhile component.

got some 1983 150 stuff ya can have if ya decide to build excellent crank
im fixing to junk it will tear down to save ya shipping on what ya want
have some real nice 150 heads resurfaced pm me
i just built my third one 149 cid 175 new parts are high to say the least
like ms said if the cyls and pistons are scuffed it is expensive to build
machine work 35 a hole and over 10000 in parts without the crank being broke
