Re: 18 foot double eagle outboard runabout

Double Eagle is a rather small builder, so the odds of finding someone that has done this model would be tough, but they do get mentioned on here periodically.

The good thing is that most boats of this style are made in close to the same way, and glass is glass, it itches when you remove it and stinks when you replace it. So many of the methods and ideas you see on other rebuilds can be used on this one.

boat restoration

I have 1978 double Eagle runabout that I am doing a complete rebuild on. My question is this,
after I strip it down to the bare hull should I not beef up the hull by laying some new fiberglass
mat on the inside bottom of the hull to strenght it.

Re: boat restoration

When I re-did my floor last winter, my stingers where still solid but I still put a extra layer of resin on them and also the bulk heads... just my .02

Re: boat restoration

A few pictures would be good, but generally, a boat hull gets its strength from the supporting structure (stringers, bulkheads, foam, etc .) and not from the thickness of the hull. It would be better to beef up those things.

Re: boat restoration

And polyester resin alone doesn't amount to much except extra expense & time. It offers no substantive value when applied w/out fiberglass..............

Epoxy resin does, but is more expensive, takes longer to cure and gelcoat won't stick to it if you get it anywhere that needs to be touched up............

No need to start another thread about your resto:
{Edit: iboats edited my link when the threads were combined}

You can ask those kinds of questions here in your resto, then all the info you need is in 1 place & easy to find when you need it for reference.

It is up to you though, so thread & post as you see fit.....
