18 Holiday or 21 Holiday?

Hi everyone, new to the forum. Have decided I want an old starcraft for lake Erie and lake Ontario trolling. Both boats I'm considering have the 120 i/o. I've been told they are the most fuel efficient. Looking for opinions on how well each can handle rough water, as well as what kind of speed i can expect out of either rig. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated. Whichever I choose, I'll post pics. Thanx in advance :)

I have the bigger holiday with the 120. She's very fuel efficient. Tops out around 31mph with 3-4 guys and fishing gear. She can handle some nasty weather and still feel very safe. We take her out in the Delaware Bay almost every weekend in the summer, and sometimes we'll head out in the Atlantic with no worries. Tons of fishing room too! I removed the original back to back seats and installed two captains chairs. I would definitely recommend the bigger Holiday especially for bigger water. Check out my restore for some pictures and videos, link in my signature.

Well...Jerry has 4 feet on me..I have the 18 footer..Same motor and my geared up top end is 35(thus far)..I don't think the 4 feet of extra hull make much of a difference.

Great Boat my Holiday is the same size as Jerry's only mustard yellow interior. And a O/B 1975 boat and motor 200 hp Johnson T/T runs like a swiss watch. Used mostly on The Pacific Ocean. West side of Vancouver Island , Canada and the Washington coast. I go thru a place they call Deception and the water roars thru there on every tide changes. Big Boat big water, Enjoy the Ride

Don't mind kev there. While he struggles with basic arithmetic he is a heck of a nice guy and can fly a Starcraft like nobodies business.:D

Your 18 footer would be a little easier to tow and launch, a hair faster with the same power plant, barely better on fuel.

Your 22 footer would handle the rougher water better, provide a bunch more fishing room and be more comfortable for any more than two doods in the boat hauling in walleye.

Welcome and have fun with your new (old) Starcraft whatever she may be.:)

I am from East Aurora and have an 18'....if I was going out on the Lake - I would definately get a 21 - Lake Erie is pretty much an ocean seeing as we are at the end of the prevailing winds..... have been searching CL for a while - let's not get into a price war!!!

I had the 18' many years ago, mine was an O/B version, today i have the 22' Islander, very similiar hull to holiday. Would not go back to the 18...no way no how.. The 22' is so much more comfy and better riding. Fuel is half what is was on the O/B and I have the 140 hp I/O. Towing weight will only be a bit heavier for the 22' and should not cause a problem unless you are towing with a very small vehicle. I tow my 22' Islander with my v-6 Blazer.

Forgive my reading, riting, and rithmitic challenged tin bretheren. Go with the bigger 21' boat.:p

Seriously go bigger, Erie can be a bit rough. 4-5 foot swells will make you wish you had a bigger boat.

You guys crack me up.

Starcraft made so many models there are plenty to choose from. I think for trolling in the Great Lakes a 22' Islander is the best, although any of the 22' rigs(or 21' depending on who you talk to) will love to be in some 4-5' swells.:D

My 16' SS does very well on Lake Huron, though I do stay relatively close to shore with it:) Good luck to ya!

Re: 18 Holiday or 21 Holiday?

Been out several times on a Skeeter bass boat 12 miles from shore. Been out that far on a 21' Fishmaster and the rockin was awful in 4-5 footers. Didn't know up from down.

Many of us who have Lake Erie in the front yard guess pretty well on manageable wave days. Been out far enough on good days and seen guys in 14' tinnies and 10hp. You pick your spots.

I like the 18-19' tinnie because it is versatile. If I was married to Lake Erie, I would get a GW Gulfstream. Heavy, hardtop, cabin.

Even the guys with huge rigs stay in on crappy waves. Getting caught in them is lack of prep, takin a chance, risky. Been on Erie when over the course of 5 hours the wind direction covered the entire compass. Crazy lake it is!

Re: 18 Holiday or 21 Holiday?

Holy responses!! Thanx for all the input guys! :) I've actually fished the great lakes a fair amount out of a 21ft Seaswirl that was a gas guzzler. Great boat, but the wife hated the fuel costs! It used to cost me $75 bucks an outing on average, going out about 10 miles and trolling with a 9.9 4stroke. Wat do you guys think about fuel costs with the 21? Also how loud is it? The one i'm lookin at has a fully padded dog house. And good luck with your numbers this time!;) lol

I can cruise all day...put putting and 30 minute or longer runs at wide open...Never used all of my 12 gallon tank..VERY economical motors the 120's are..
As far as loud? I just have a plywood doghouse and the motor isnt loud (compared to those pesky OBs..lol) at all...Here is a simple formula
Since i don't have all the proper symbols,
I'll use % for angular velocity
$ for angular acceleration

a(B)=a(a) + $Xr(B/A) + %X[%Xr(B/A)] + 2%X(v(B/A)+a(B/A)

X stands for cross product
r is a vector and (B/A) means that the vector at point B is relative to A thus equating to velocity per decibel increase

No...they are not loud..I like the steady hummmmmmmmm of my motor anyway

Re: 18 Holiday or 21 Holiday?

Niagara ---- my 22 holiday as I said is a great big water boat. Regardless one must be carefull. The posted boat looks good and if as solid as they claim is worth the $$ You would spend more than that on a rebuild and probably have issues with any older motor that has sat for a while. Plus its ready to be used as is.
