Found milky white gear oil so decided to drop the LU. I dont have a manual yet so please help with this procedure. I suspect the shift linkage is accessed through the hole on the side. The unit wont drop so my question is do I disconnect the linkage through this port? Additionally please give advice as to condition of the unit around the prop shaft. I have a LU seal kit ready to go...

Thanks.

Re: 18 HP 63' Evinrude Fastwin LU help!!

there are 4 1/4-20 bolts, and one 3/8 bolt that hold the lower unit on, plus the shift shaft. In your 2nd pic, you show the shift shaft connector cover, and if you TOTALLY remove the bottom bolt of the connector, plus the other 5 bolts I mentioned, the lower unit should slide off. Sometimes the shift shaft connector is a little tight, or someone forgot to install the o-ring at the top of the shaft and the driveshaft rusts into the powerhead. I suspect your shift shaft connector is a little tight.
I wouldn't worry about the 1st pic-----what's important is what the prop shaft looks like where the prop shaft seal rides. The lower unit prop shaft seal recess looks fine to me.
Good luck,
JBJ

Yes, look inside the oval hole and you should see a brass connector, take the lower screw out and the lower unit should drop down for you. The proper way to find you leak would be to pressure/vacume test the lower unit. If I had the lower unit off, I would go ahead and reseal the lower unit with the kit you have. You might want to think about replacing the water pump while you have the lower unit off.

Ok, so I discovered this damage to the gear housing head right where the seal goes. Is this toast?? Dang these things are $154!! Any thoughts??

Thanks

Can anyone help with how to properly reinstall these seals?? The seal that came out was one piece. Are these reinstalled back to back? Thanks in advance...

Re: 18 HP 63' Evinrude Fastwin LU help!!

looking at schematic from marineengine.com...seems 1 seal for the d/s seal is all that's used...part no. 10 the shift shaft seal <fat oring> will need to be replaced which requires removal of part no. 11 <shift shaft bushing>...if you remove this w/o the proper tool you'll probably have to replace it as well...part no. 40 will have to be replaced <large o ring that goes around the bearing head>..now..that $154 question..if the seal isn't leaking I wouldn't worry about it as there looks to be enough material left to hold the seal in place...some members have purchased kits that included the seals found in the gear head , then used small tools to cut, collapse, and remove them, fwiw, I'd try to find a bearing head on ebay before buying a new one...would also suggest you use 3M 847 as your sealer

Re: 18 HP 63' Evinrude Fastwin LU help!!

You'll need a "seal puller" to remove those seals properly. You can get one cheaply at harbor freight tools, or autozone, or other such places for about $10. Be careful when using it, and patiently go around the seal with it, or you may break the recess edges that the seal sits in. I can't really tell what damage you speak of on the propshaft seal carrier. If the brass bushing inside has no jagged edges and there's enough material to hold the seal in place, reuse it. If not, find one on ebay or laingsoutboards.com. You can get a whole new used and pressure tested lower unit there for only about $300, and I'm sure they'd sell you the part you need for a reasonable price.
You can use a 5/16" tap to tap the bronze shift shaft bushing only about 3 threads deep, screw in a 5/16 bolt and tap the shift shaft bushing out from the back side. You'll need to replace the shift shaft o-ring almost for sure. You can get the correct tool cheaply for removing the shift shaft seal bushing if you know where to look, but the aforementioned method will work, it's just not the best way to do it.
Hope this helps,
JBJ

Re: 18 HP 63' Evinrude Fastwin LU help!!

I appriciate the advice. However I still need to know how this two piece seal is to be installed. The seal that came out was one piece and the kit gave me two identical seals as seen in the pic. Do they both go in the same direction?? One side is solid and the other side is open- I can see the spring...

Thanks

if there's room for both under the waterpump wear plate..one faces down, one faces up..back to back..spring side facing down, spring side facing up...one keeps the oil in..the other keeps the water out

jb sure was on the right track, this tool 5/16 punch worked flawlessly. Punched it out through the back side perfectly without having to tap anything!! New o ring installed, on to the next step...

Thanks again guys!!!
