Here's a quick update on my 18hp fastwin, finally getting somewhere there was a distinct firing of some sort think it may have been a misfire any ideas what i should try now, took on as much as i could from the readings.???

Go to the Engine FAQs, parenouf. Do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

You need to troubleshoot the problem in a logical step by step manner as outlined in the above referenced thread; "outboard won't start". You need compression, spark and fuel. And you want to trouble shoot in that order. The only thing I might add is that you want to make sure that the spark will jump 1/4" in open air. Get an inline spark tester. Judging a "hot blue spark" with the plug removed and grounded on the block is too subjective. Making sure it will jump 1/4 inch in open air is not. If it will jump 1/4" it will be hot and blue!

Good luck!

Ok guys here's an update, my 1960 18hp evinrude fastwin started and ran for about 10 minutes but her revs were very high then she started rattling violently but we managed to stop her all got a bit scary now she won't start points are still fine and all plugs check out good but no spark when connected to engine i'm guessing its the coils any ideas??? And any clues as to prices of coils???

i've just found out i've got spark on one plug only. spose one is better than none any ideas anyone??

When you try to start,do it with the lower unit at least half way submerged or you will burn out the impeller and blow up your engine.
If you have spark on only one cylinder, make sure that the ignition cable is well connected to the plug and the coils.
You may have to remove the flywheel and replace the coils. 48 year old coils tend to crack. While you have the flywheel off,you probably want to put in fresh condensers and points. Not neccesarily because they are bad now,but because it is a pain in the neck to remove the flywheel again and again.

If you have spark to both plugs that will jump a 1/4 in gap then try to use some pre mix in a spray bottle and spray it directly into the carb(take the air silencer off) and see if it will then run. To run it needs air spark and fuel in the right amounts. If it has these it will run as long as it is mechanically sound. If it will not continue to run you may have to work on the carb or do a link and sink.

ok the spark is very good now on both plugs so i think i've narrowed it down to fuel supply problem is there just one jet on the carb if not is there a drawing anywhere to show the parts. and whats a link and sink????

Link & sync is getting the carb properly timed with the ignition.I believe there is a cam on the stator that ingages the carb as it advances there is a mark on the cam that just opens the carb when it touches the roller. If the motor has sat around alot it will need the fuel system checked cleaned and repaired from tank to carb If you do only one component the rest may just foul it again. If your sure the motor is sound and you don't know how old the impeller is you should replace it before running it any more.
You should try to get yourself a manual you may find an aftermarket manual at the library. It will save you time and frustration.

I think I may have found the root of the problem, as I dropped the flywheel back on last night I noticed that the small key thing is flush with the drive bolt up the middle. I don't know the technical names can this key thing be replaced?
