I have a 1966 18hp Evi fastwin that I broke the drive/impeller shaft.
Are there any other motors/brands that use the same shaft.
I think I found a number for it: 0308615

I'm kind of a budget motor builder(novice), trying to turn a few bucks and have some fun at the same time........Any help would be greatly appreciated...!

Well, that part number is the driveshaft for several years of the short shaft 18 hp, and perhaps for one or two other Johnson and Evinrude models. No other brands, though, I think.

It's available new, but at a price that's worth more than some 18 hp johnnyrudes themselves.

Check with outboard used parts outfits, like www.tcoutboard.com. They'll have the part used, but you may still not like the price.

Also, keep an eye on ebay and your local Craig's List.

If you can wait long enough, you'll find a cheap one somewhere, even if you have to buy an entire broken outboard to get it.

All of the standard 18s from 1965 through 1968 use the 308615. The longshaft used 308616.

Call the salvage yards, someone will have a used one.

How did you break it? That isn't "normal". They usually break because the housing is bent. It will break another one if that is the case. You have to disassemble the housings (gear and exhaust) and check them on a surface plate and dial indicator to tell if they are bent.

I hit the prop on a rock...?
After getting back home and tearing it down I discovered my shear pin was stainless; not likely to break before something else(expensive) broke--I know, I'm kicking my own *** over it already for not going through it completely before taking it out............!

Call Tim's outboard in Hackensack, mn. Google and find the #

He's WAY WAY cheaper than TCoutboard ______. And he'll ship cheap and ASAP, if he has one. Good luck!

Think whatever you want to think, but I can tell you that it is SUPPOSED to have a stainless steel DRIVE pin. It is not a "shear" pin. Check it out if you want to, the part number is 306949. The propeller has a rubber hub that absorbs impacts like grinding up rocks. Yeah, I know, you can't see it but it is in there, between the bronze hub and the aluminum blades part. In fact if you fast forward a few years you will find that they completely did away with the drive pin and they don't break shafts.

That gearcase is very fragile on the web of the casting, I would not doubt at all it is bent. The tolerance on the gearcase is .030 out of parallel. You may have a problem finding a used one that is not bent that much. I have 3, or 4 laying around, and they all go over that. If you put it together using the old case, you will probably here a high pitch whine. This will be more noticeable standing on shore, and have someone run the boat.

What's that about? Twin Cities Outboard is just a business. They don't force anyone to buy from them. Prices are prices. My transactions with them have all been more than satisfactory.

Bashing businesses like that is just not done here. Nothing wrong with pointing out a business and saying their prices are cheaper, but there's no need to call a business names like that.

Here is one way you can check that gearcase for straightness. You can set it on a drill press table with a dial indicator in the spindle. With the skeg removed, and all surface's clean, run the case around under the indicator. If you don't have an indicator, put a simple pointer in the spindle, a nail will work, and measure the low spots with a feeler guage. If you find a used case, keep in mnd, it may very well be bent out of tolerance. A bent case will also wear out the drive shaft bearings, or bushings very quickly.

I'm pretty sure everything was pretty straight(not a bent gearcase), I've run this motor quite a bit the last 2 summers, and when I hit whatever it was I hit, it was petty solid. I've been looking on eBay. I'm in east central IL so I 'm kinda in the middle of everything; I'm just looking for the cheapest one, if I have to buy a whole lower unit, I guess that'll do.

If you hit something pretty solid, and the driveshaft is broke, I'm betting it is bent. If you replace the gearcase, look for one off of a 25 hp up thru 1976. It will bolt right on, and is a heavier case.

You don't seem to get it. If the gearcase (or exhaust housing) is bent it will run a long time that way. But every time the shaft turns it flexes back and forth just a bit. Eventually, that flexing weakens the material and it will break. If you whack a rock just before it is about to break on it's own, you just hasten the event. "I am pretty sure everything is straight" means you are in denial. There is only one way to know if it is straight or not and that is to check it. You can't just stand back and look at it and tell.

Now, you can just replace the shaft and it will run long enough to unload the motor on some unsuspecting soul and he can go in denial when it breaks for him.

Yeah, thanks for the "constructive?" criticism...
Now I realize where not to go when I'm asking for advice.
Yes, I realize you may know quite a bit more than the average Joe, but I'm fairly sure I can do without the "holier than thou" attitude.
Yes, I appreciate the advice and help from all; I just don't need all these "extras".......

Re: 18hp Evi Fastwin w/ broken driveshaft

Ed, you may not like his curmudgeonlyness, (is that a word?) but he's absolutely right. Thinking it's not bent because it would be inconvenient and expensive if it were won't make it so. Just like my wife thinking the fascia boards behind our crappy gutters aren't rotten because it would be inconvenient and expensive if they were doesn't mean they're not.

Bottom line is those shafts don't break because of hitting a rock with the prop alone. There has to be another factor (bent case). It's just like the aluminum cylinder head in your car. People have a head that's warped .020" So they have it milled .020" to make it flat again. So guess what? Now when they bolt their camshaft down it's now bowed 20 thousandths of and inch. Result? Broken camshaft sooner or later.

Cheers...............Todd

Re: 18hp Evi Fastwin w/ broken driveshaft

I guess I'm only irritated because I was there, I know how it went down, and how it sounded when it happened. Apparently my mind's eye has a different picture of the whole thing. I've had this motor a few years, never had a problem(i.e.,no whine from gearcase( and then when I hit something, BAM! Game over. I'll replace the driveshaft and go from there, I'm prolly gonna have to drive 80 miles to get a good deal on one, so I'll go from there.
I'll keep all in the loop......

Ed: As I said in my post, you may not have an easy time finding a straight one. I checked 3, or 4 before I did, and the best one was about .020 out of parallel. If you go with the 15, or 18 hp case, you will find it very thin thru the web. If you can check a 18 again'st a 25 hp case with a caliper you will see the difference.
