I have a 1969 "I believe" 18hp evinrude motor. last week durring a fishing trip it started making a banging noise like the prop hit a log. this got worse and finally the gears started grinding. we limped back as long as my passenger held pressure on the shifter in forward. this only happened in forward. The mechanic said the "clutch dogs" are bad, I don't know much about boat motors. he said they cost about $500 if he could find them. just wondering if anyone had similar problems and if I can get the parts anywhere for less. Please email chadchappell@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Re: 18hp evinrude problems

The mechanic is correct.
The clutch dog is available for about 60 bucks.
The forward gear is about 500 bucks.
It is much easier to get a lower end off of ebay and replace yours with it if your forward gear is shot.
