Hello, I just put new coils, condensers, points and plugs in my motor. (sn#18102s-e10283) its a 18hp 71 model. I just tried it, she ran ok but it spits at idle. At high speeds it runs smooth (didnt seem to rev out as high). Ran it a few minutes and when I stoped to try some adjustments it spit and then died. Here's the problem the thing was really hot to the touch. Could running hot cause the backfiring. As for it running hot, what should I do first, change the thermostat or is the impeller probably the problem. Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh yeah this motor has sat for about 2 years

Kolo,
By all means ,change the impeller and thermostat. Take note that all of the impeller is intact when you replace it. If you're missing any 'arms' of the impeller, plan on flushing the power head to dislodge any pieces or debris. After the cooling problem is solved, then let's address the running issues.

I just checked Nappa and they don't have a 1971 kit available (only 1953-65 18hp) but, any Johnny/Rude dealer can get what you need.
