I am trying to bring a 1967 18hp Fastwin back to life (I broke the block trying to remove a stuck head bolt. Long, sad story of stupidity in action)

Anyway, I bought a 62 powerhead off ebay, thinking they are all pretty much the same, but I had to pull the 'tall' fuel pump bypass cover off the 67 and put it on the 62 to give the throttle link under the flywheel enough room to clear some linkage. No probs there, I think...

But now, there's something else. The cylinder heads of the 67 and 62 are slightly different. The thermostat covers do not match between the 67 and the 62. The local OMC counter clerk basically told me 'Sorry. That's the gasket the microfiche calls for', when he showed me the 67-style thermo cover gasket, even though I brought in the cover for the 62 (no wonder I'd rather buy online).

Anyone know why the change in thermostat/cyl head design? Any reason I should or should not run the 67 cylinder head on the 62?
Are there any other weird things with running a 62 powerhead on a 67 'everything else?' I guess I have to run the 24:1 premix? But any gotchas besides the ones I've run already run across?
